I'm finally getting around to finishing off my 341 Desoto hemi. What are you guys running for valve springs with std length, 3/8" valves on a tall deck Desoto hemi ? Max lift is .500", 224 @.050, street hyd roller cam, I don't want to cut the spring seats, the spring installed height is approx 1.68" I believe. What springs have you guys successfully run on the street ? Thanks !
Well, HAMB is the place to ask, because in sixty-five years of hot rods the number of tall deck DeSoto hemis I've seen running street hydraulic rollers is exactly none. Did you ask the cam grinder for a seat/open pressure recommendation? The 3/8" stem valves are heavy, so more spring than the eqivalent SBC/SBF would require. Knowing the recommended seat/open, lift, installed height, it's just combing the catalogs then. It's HAMB heresy, but I've found beehive springs to be worth 500 more RPM on the same cam. jack vines
Hey Packard....there have been at least a few on the HAMB that have used hyd rollers in Desotos but it was some time ago. Been combing the catalogs yes....not much out there for the installed height that will make the reqd seat/open that I need. Will likely need a single/damper spring to clear the stock type valve seals. Beehives need a taller IH/longer valve that creates valve cover clearance issues as well so no dice. Yes, must always allow more seat/open bc they drop off after break in and also bc of the m*** off the 3/8" valve. I have a spare set of ported heads I can setup later with 5/16" valves for even less weight than an 11/32" valve but that's for later on. So for now I'm simply trying to find the best spring if possible that will allow me to run this cam without all the extra machining and headaches....just street use, no racing. Lift: .500" Recommended seat/open - 140/150lbs / 340-350 lbs Took some measurements on the 330 head : Spring OD - 1.405" Spring pocket diameter on head - 1.455" Installed height - 1.580" Guide OD - .655"
