I worked for Standard Oil of California in the Baldwin Hill oil field in 1965-1967; first as a Well Puller and then an electrical apprentice. Even on one of old “conventional rigs” as they were called. It boarded North Inglewood at Ladera Park but was part of LosAngeles. I lived in lnglewood from 1944 thru 1963 near Centinela Park. Nice photo…

Ruth Elder aviator and actor seen here in Los Angeles in 1927. She carried private pilot certificate P675, and was known as the “Miss America of Aviation”.

In October 1927, Ruth embarked on a daring flight from New York aboard the Stinson Detroiter American Girl, with George Haldeman as the pilot, aiming to become the first woman to fly across the Atlantic. Although mechanical issues forced them to ditch the plane 360 miles from the Azores, they set a new over-water endurance flight record, covering 2,623 miles. At that time, it was also the longest flight ever completed by a woman. After being rescued by a passing ship, she and George were celebrated with a ticker-tape parade upon their return.

George Haldeman came to Lakeland, Florida from Kansas with his family in 1914 and began to develop an interest in aviation, taking flight lessons and eventually becoming a flight instructor himself. In the fall of 1927 he and one of his students, Ruth Elder, attempted a Transatlantic flight, falling a few hundred miles short when their airplane was forced to ditch in the Atlantic after developing an oil leak. Haldeman continued his lengthy career in aviation, becoming a test pilot, aviation executive, and government consultant.
