Another gem from the Cobbs archive, thanks for posting this Ryan. I didn’t check the whole list of results but one name caught my eye right away. M. Dees, I assume that would be Mark Dees, lawyer, hot rodder, Bonneville racer and Harry Miller historian whipped his ‘54 Merc sedan around the course in 1:00:77.

What an interesting turn of events from what we've come to expect from Tom Cobbs. Thanks for the history lesson @ Ryan. As an aside, in the mid sixties, my oldest brother went off to college in an odd looking little Singer car. I'm not sure if it was a Gazelle or a Hunter.

  5. Mr. Cobbs was present at more than a few important events. I stumbled across a Brian Lohnes video a few days ago about the history of nitromethane. It seems he was the first loser in a nitro vs gasoline 'organized' race against Vic Edelbrock. Vic had run across some discussion about nitro use and bought some from the Dooling brothers (of tether cars fame) that were mixing it into the fuel they sold. He spent some time experimenting and found that 20% added to gasoline gave a substantial increase in power without grenading the flathead. He somehow promoted a match race against Tom's blown flathead and handily beat him with only carburetors. One run only, and Vic packed up and left before anyone could figure what the 'funny' smell was...

The red Singer is a picture from the internet, the black singer is one that I actually saw at a gathering of vintage aircraft and vintage cars as well, a number of years ago!
    Enjoy from Dennis.

I nearly bought one. Neat little cars. They have aluminum bodies over a wood skeleton. Pretty under powered. If the MG's hadn't come along, they probably would've been more popular.

    Another facet to the gem.

There is a Singer in a closed junkyard near here.

Funny to see Singers mentioned on the HAMB. Given Singer is my last name, at one point I was kind of hot to add one to my garage. More for the name than anything else. I never found one that fit my likes and budget though and sort of lost interest after a while.

Not sure it's the same as mentioned in the post but there's still an active Singer club. Singercars.com if anyone is interested.

Fascinating! Only wish could learn more about some of these cars. Like L. Dunham’s KurtisKraft Ford 6 at 52:57

This car was actually sold at auction a few years ago... Went for $30k - pretty good money for a Midget race car.

Larry raced it from 1948 well into the 1980s. By the time it was sold, it was running a V8-60.

"SOLAR" made some cool midgets as well that were powered by the V8-60.

Mr. Weaver.....a pharmaceutical salesman, lived down the street....he had several running, driving Singers and a parts one or to at any given time.
I remember being quite taken by them and asking for a ride anytime I could get one.... I was probably 9-10 years old at the time...
I've often wondered what happened to them....
