I made the mistake of attenting a local "car show" yesterday morning. I knew it was a mistake when I pulled into the lot...vintage BMW's, import tuners, Ferrari's, MG's, Austin Healy's, old volkswagons, attorney's playing dress up as "bikers" on multi thousand dollar "choppers", gold chain street rods...and me.

Whatever. I park and walk for ten minutes (I can appreciate this stuff, it's just not what I'm particularly in to) and figure it's time to roll. As I'm leaving, this cat sticks his head in my window and says "wow, this car is great...you can drive it anywhere and park it wherever you want and never have to worry about it...cool". My reply to him is "what do you mean"? He hits me with "well, you know, the primer paint and less than perfect this and that"...again I come back with "I still don't get it...what do you mean". At this point his buddy catches on that I'm not too happy with his pal and turns and leaves. This idiot continues to stammer and gives me some lame *** "well you know...it's cool, but it's no Ferrrari" look. I shake my head in disbelief and leave the scene.

Moral of the story...stay away from "car shows" in Irvine. Anybody else ever get this kind of **** from some clueless "douche" at a car show?

first let me start this by saying I'm 30 years old....but I look a lot younger than I really am. So anyway, I was at a cruise one night last year and I was driving my 53 Chevy hard top. Its primer black, layed out, shaved. Anyway, I had 3 of my buddies in the car and we were pulling out of the parking lot to go somewhere else, as I had enough of looking at spit and polished gold chainer mobiles.

This guy comes walking up to my car with a friend of his, he's maybe about 40-45. He says "hey man, thats a *****in Merc you got there kid". So my buddies are chuckling in the back. I said back to him "so are you a big car guy, buddy?". And he said "hell yeah, I've been into cars all my life, I've built a few". So I asked if he's ever been into Chevy's. He said "yeah, that's what I've usually built or restored were Chevy's" So I said, "well, you're into Chevy's, but you told me this was a nice Merc." And he returned, "it is a Merc, I could spot one a mile away."

This went on for a few minutes, me telling him its a Chevy, he's ***uring me that I'm driving a Mercury. Finally I've had enough with this ****head and I said to him "for being a BIG TIME car guy and restorer, you don't know **** all about cars do you?" Then he starts in with the kid **** again, telling me to take my dads car home, **** like that. His buddy was trying to pull him away, realizing he should have shut his mouth and never even started. This is when I put the car in park and got out of the car. Some guy just waking down the sidewalk watched all this go down and said to this ***hole "you probably know less about fighting than you do about cars, so before you embar*** your self even more than you already did, and you get your *** kicked by these 4 guys in that 53 CHEVY, you should pack up and take your yuppie *** back home".

His buddies laughed at him all the way down the sidewalk. I don't make it a regular thing to want to fight at car shows, but this dumb *** wouldn't drop it, and he was SURE I didn't know what kind of car I had and I was too young to know **** anyway.

53sledsteve, HaHa, I can relate. But rest ***ured after you turn 60 that won't be a problem anymore. Sure, there will still be ***holes out there but you wont care or do anything about it, it just doesn't matter. Enjoy your car, that's where it's at.

It really didn't bug me at all when he first came up....most of those car shows are full of people that ignorant, you can tell by what they drive! But the part that really got under my skin was we were trying to leave, and this guy had me hung up as we were blocking traffic to get out.

I've had more than a few people tell me what my car is, or should I say, what it isn't. But this guy was so loud and obnoxious about it, you just couldn't help but get irritated....he was just one of those types of people that can get under your skin in .3 seconds.

Ultimately though, he was publicly made to look like a dumb***......and I love every time I'm in my car driving it, so I won!

No offense, but it sounds to me like you were just itching to take it the wrong way. Primer is lower maintenace, and you don't have to freak out about it as much as the high-dollar guys. I plan on leaving mine suede for those exact reasons. Couldn't you just have taken it as a compliment and leave it be?

My favorite is when a guy comes up to me and my car and says "yeah, I'm gonna throw together one of these Rat Rods one day"... they totally ignore all the fabrication and body mods just 'cause the car doesn't have shiny paint on it (yet). Kinda pisses me off. Sure, buddy, just "throw it together"... whatever.
Another common comment is "my buddy has a car just like this one". Sure he does...
    Oh well.

    I agree 100%!
Thats what I'd WANT to hear from people. Sounds to me like he was in the process of "getting it" when he approached you.

Despite where he was and the big $$$ cars all around him, he was realizing that having fun with a cool car didn't equate to cubic dollars spent on high maintainance trailer queens.

He took the bait but YOU blew the opportunity to set the hook in that guy!

Now he thinks, as many already do, that trad rodders have an even ****pier at***ude than the gold chainers they love to put down!!!

My friend that had a 51 Merc always had guys saying I had a Hudson just like that back etc etc. He would just go along and say just like that eh.
The car was totally reworked. Flush skirts, frenched headlights, rounded hood corners and doors and trunk. 54 Merc taillights. 54 chevy grill, chopped with slanted posts and a fifty back window. Yep just like it.

I don't care what anyone says or thinks about my car.

It does bug me to no end when someone thinks that, just because it's wearing 68 year old paint & interior, they can lean on it, open the hood, open the door & sit down inside, etc....

i use to love it when i would go to a show and end up sitting on the hood of my car and people would cringe at how i was sitting on the paint.

nothing use to be better then sitting on the hood of my 64 corvette with a pizza box on the scoop, soda can on hood and pizza greese dripping down the hood

I'm sure you guys recognize this car. I went to the All Ford Picnic, here in SoCal,and it was there. I looked around and couldn't find the new owner. I was expecting a 30 to 40ish guy. There was a 65-70ish guy sitting behind the car. I asked him where the owner was,and he said he owned it. I'm thinking there's no way. He bought it from the original owner/builder,when he was here from Japan.(his story, not mine) He had the car in the Autotrader for $125K,for months. No takers. A guy offered him 85K,and he turned it down! He wouldn't tell me how much he paid for it. I asked him where he lived,to find out how far he drove. He said"I trailer it wherever I go!"WTF!!!The guy who built the car, brought it to the states, drove to Paso,Bonniville,Viva,ALL over. He said he doesn't drive it because he has too much invested in it! WTF! I took him over to see my Merc. He says"when you gonna finish it?" I said,it's done, except for an interior. He says he knows a guy who has all kinds of parts for Hudsons. I looked at him and said"Hudson, were at an ALL Ford show, don't you know cars?" I had one JUST like that in High School. I said,"dude, you're F'd up! This is a '49 Merc." Just then his wife walked up."nice Merc,a '49 right?" I laughed my *** off. She was pretty cool. All day I got the dirty looks from the Ford purists. They would walk right up and tell you how you RUINED that car. Interesting day. I'll go back next year.

    Hoover,
I'm just curious how many guys tell you there's no such thing as a '42 Ford.

No offense taken. I would have taken it as a compliment had it been given as such. The comment was taken as it was given...backhanded. It's one thing thing to say someone has a nice car...it's another to infer your ride has a "nice personality" and good for you for "taking a fat girl to the dance".

Workin' on it as we speak.. I'm just tired of folks who can't tell the difference between "rat rod" and "work in progress". Usually they're the same guys who refuse to drive their car if it's got even the slightest scratch, dirt, or imperfection.

I actually dont have a problem with a comment about "car is great...you can drive it anywhere and park it wherever you want and never have to worry about it," cause i actually use it myself and I think it's a very valid comment.

Some people build gold chainer cars that are simply "too pretty" to drive, instead of being utility built... like a traditional custom and hot rod should be. With flashy painted/polished undercarraige and chrome exhaust that fears bluing, 30k paint jobs, etc, some guys build undrivable trophies and i dont consider them cars. it's not a car unless you drive it. many of these 'cars' are only for looks.

you dont wear a gold chain and a flashy white suit to go running, so why would your car while driving?

i consider his point a compliment.

****'M! But,you can't wear a San Diego jersey to a Raider game, and expect to NOT hear some ****. That's why I avoid the "Gold-chainer" shows. The only two I like is the DelMar show and the Labor Day cruise, only cause you can cruise INSIDE the show. I'm not the kind of guy who can hold his tongue. Some jackhole opens his mouth,i've gotta retort! Not to the guy who asks what kinda car it is,but to the guy who HAS to tell you his opinion,or what you shoulda done with YOUR car. GAME ON!!!Maybe that's how the Bad Bob thing got tagged on me. I'm actually a sweet guy.(********!...eat me!)

Rat rod has nothing to do with it. As far as I'm concerned I don't have a "rat rod". I have a car...some call it a hot rod...some don't. At this event, I said nothing about anyone elses ride. I can respect and admire almost any kind of car for the work that has gone into or the check that was written to buy it. I'm simply stating a point that this person was, in my opinion ignorant and neglected to show me the same respect that I did to the rest of the crowd at the event.

I had a guy at NAPA tell me that Oldsmobile did not start making cars until 1957 and there is no such thing as a 324. Go figure

...I'm 46... prolly had close to 30 cars that ran and I took to shows, mostly for a place to keep my cooler. none were perfect. all were driven at every oppoutunity, some were my daily drivers.

in all these years I have never had a comment from an uninformed person that got me all puffed up like some of you guys. we are in a unique hobby. with all sorts of different people from build it yourselfers to buy one already done people who know nothing other than thier car is cool.

the coment that got this thread started was nothing, I'd have just told him "yup.. I drive it every chance I get".

people get thier underpants in a bunch for the strangest reasons
