I am restoring my 1935 Ford Cabriolet windshield frame and gl***. The frame has some rust pimples, and I want to restore it and chrome plate it. If I can find a new one better yet. I have not found any for sale they are very rare. Also, the gl*** has a crack, so it need replacing. The first order of business is to remove the windshield frame and gl***. This is where I am asking for help. I cannot find anywhere how to remove it. From what I can tell it is held to the body by the frame rubber gasket. Are there any screws holding the frame to the body. Or is it the rubber seal in a U shape the fits on the body lip like many designs of vintage cars? Thank you
There’s a bunch of “adventures” ahead for you. Based on my experiences with a ‘35 pickup: Can you crank open the windshield? If so, you will see where the crank out mechanism attaches to the center to the lower windshield frame. There are two 10-32 screws that attach it. Above, on the swing out hinges are two screw on each hinge. You will need to remove them. Once you have the frame out, you will see on back side on each end there are screws that need to be removed to separate the lower half of the windshield frame from the top. This can be difficult even if you can get the screws out. Given the windshield gl*** is shot, heat can be your friend. There are new replacement windshields available made by NC industries. Just saw them at Hershey last week.
Pretty sure cabriolet frames don’t swing, so there has to be another method of screws or bolts holding it in. The rubber is just a lip seal stuck into a groove of the frame. After removal from the body, I recommend just smashing out the gl***. Less chance of bending stuff when you try to pry it apart. Probably a couple small screws in each side that will need careful removal. Then it’s just careful patching for a rechrome. Just regular magic metal work.
Cabriolet windshields don't swing. OP: The frame is secured to the body with screws. You'll need to remove the header panel and garnish moldings to access them, and the bottom ones are obscured by the dash rail. www.ironandsteele.com
Thank you so much for your reply. Yes on the Cabriolet the windshield frame and gl*** are fix and does not swing. ironandsteel is correct the frame is attached to the body with screws and you have to remove the moldings etc to reach them. This was described to me on another posting. Thank you all
Here is a Co that makes new windshield frames. NC Industries in PA 570-888-6216,www.windshieldframes.com If your frame has rust it is risky to have it replated. The striping process will remove the rust but you need to neutralize the inner portions of the frame which is near impossible.It might rust out from the inside.
