Understood. I was just a little surprised considering I believe this car to have a 3.73 gear ratio and no OD. I do pretty much keep it to 65 mph or less.

  2. Great little car you have, Jeff. I don't know how I missed this thread for so long. I always enjoy @guthriesmith threads, they are always very entertaining. You do your cars well.

Man…sorry I missed you. :( I didn’t get to town until about 4:30 or so Saturday and actually saw Bret and Clay turning the corner right in front of me so ended up with them at the host hotel. I did run into a few others from the Springfield area but also missed seeing lots of other folks.

Just more driving so far... Church Sunday morning, work today, etc. I did finally wash all the bugs off last night after the Hot Rod Hundred and Gathering at the Roc last weekend... It was getting hard to see through the windshield.

Had to go do a parade with my OT toy today so what better car to drive to go get the truck that hauls it?

Pretty sure my fuel pump*****ped out on the way home yesterday. I was maybe 5 miles or so from home on the interstate when the car lost power and started starving for fuel it seemed. When I pulled over, I opened the hood and noticed the fuel pump hemorrhaging fuel. Considering I was fairly close to home, I limped it in…. Hope to have time to check it out tomorrow evening. I knew I might regret putting a “new but really old” diaphragm in the pump. Guessing it tore or something.

On the bright side, I made it home and also have more than 1700 miles on it since I got it now. :D

And that is why I’m kinda nervous about using all of these NOS rubber products I have in my garage. I know whenever my dad and I were buying all that we could get our hands on 30+ years ago you could not find the stuff. But now most of it is readily available and I have all these boxes of “When’s the last time you saw one of these” sitting around taking up the shelves. The other day I found a box of rear shackle bushings that were all hard as a brick and there had to be over a hundred of them. Also last year when I was cleaning out on of my sheds I found a tote of NOS lower radiator hoses that were so brittle I had to toss them.

Agreed, I have been pretty skeptical of some of the old "new" rubber products for quite some time but decided to try it here. Anyway, my son worked at a feed store that used to also be an auto parts store several years ago. When he worked there, the owners asked me about helping them sell some of the old "new" parts and I let them know my concern with the rubber products. They seemed shocked and wondered why these new parts might not bring new prices... Pretty sure they still have all that inventory...

You did better than I did in my '40 convertible. I got between 10 and 11. I am guessing some of that had to do with my choke being non operational combined with an excessive use of the loud pedal.

Haven't had a chance to mess with figuring this out yet. Was fighting a cough and congestion most of the week and then we decided to pull the clutch out of my youngest son's OT vette last night. I did move the car out of the shop and it at least ran good enough to put out back under the lean too. It is definitely struggling though...

I’ll be glad to get some late models fixed so I can get back in the shop. My cars don’t like hanging out with all the beekeeping supplies.

Man I love that color on your car!!

I think I have figured out why the fuel disappears from the fuel bowl and keeping the car from starting. I hooked up the electric fuel pump and when I went to prime the motor with it I just so happened had the hood up and saw fuel shooting out of the flexible fuel line. After cleaning up the mess I swapped the line out with another NOS one. Yeah I know old rubber products, but in its defense it’s nice and supple (there’s that word again:D) and the other one was on the car at least 30 years and was hard as a brick. But the way I’m figuring it was letting the fuel evaporate through the faulty hose and that’s why it would be stubborn to crank. Since this is not a pressure hose you could go years without knowing it was bad. Hopefully this fixes the issue but who the heck knows it’s always something isn’t it??? Only time will tell

  22. Well, keep an eye on the new/old one and see how it goes. Hopefully, the hose is good for a while.

Well I have two boxes of them (about 6 per box) so hopefully I’ll find at least one that is good lol.

Funny - I was about to post something similar. I too have an issue with the fuel draining back after sitting. I crawled under the car the other night to see where I could mount an electric fuel pump and found the metal fuel line out of the tank crossing the top of the exhaust pipe where the pipe bends over the rear axle. The two were in contact ! Apparently when the exhaust guy put it on 2 years ago he failed to tell me he had to take the fuel line out of the bracket holding it to the frame. I'm going to reposition that line and see if that helps the draining issue. It will for darn sure prevent a future catastrophe.

So, I messed with this some a few days ago but still having issues. I am fixing things as I go though like the rock hard fuel line and vacuum hose to the wipers. I used a fuel pump diaphragm from one of the mechanical pumps that @MMM1693 brought me last month to try to fix my pump. I also replaced the inline fuel filter on the inlet side of the pump. Anyway, just trying to sneak in a little work here and there out under the lean too on the back of the shop when not working late or on other stuff. Thinking of having a DYS day at work next Wednesday so better get it figured out soon. I hate to be the guy giving others a hard time about not driving their old cars to work and mine not make it…
