Good evening folks. I was hoping to get some advice on drivetrain setup for a project 1964 gmc Gonna be a 1 ton flatbed for hauling and farm use here around the house. Not gonna be driving cross country or anything like that. Probably never go more than a hundred miles in any one direction. I wanna build this out of stuff I have so here is the plan 350 pontiac th400 trans late 70's front end with disc brakes late 70's 14 bolt rear with 4.10 gears. This is gonna have me winding pretty high on the road out here. 2400 or so rpm at 55 mph. Now I wont be doin a lot of interstated driving but I dont think it would be happy at that speed. They make a 3.42 gear set for that rear. But is that too high of a rear for a tow vehicle? Will that make it a turd? Im not gonna be pulling super heavy loads. Just moving tractors and round bales of hay. Thanks in advance. Im convinced the hamb is the smartest place on the internet
I have a few cars with gearing that has them running around 3000 rpm at moderate highway speeds (60-70 mph), and they work just fine. I drive them all over the country. What are you worried about? Just build it and drive it, and enjoy the song from the engine at speed.
Lmao Squirrel your exactly who i wanted to hear from!! Im gonna do just that. Im gonna put it together like it is. I can always change it later. Man I appreciate reading your posts/replies more than anything else. Thanks again!!
If I was going to be loading the truck to pull hay bails and tractors around locally for most of the trucks use, I would rather have the 4.10 gears. I would not build it for the few times it will roll down the highway at 70+ mph, if the rpms bother you, you may just have to slow down for these few highway trips.
