Projects finally found a true 57 265 Chevy

    If you lived closer, I'd buy it just so I have one ! Ha ! Unless you make it to the Cleveland Ohio area sometime in the future. What is your price tag for it ? And is it the Chartreuse color or is it actually yellow ? From what I have found, there could possibly been a truck engine painted a yellow color. Check the stamped code and see what it is. Compare it to the letters I posted in this thread to see if it came in a car or a truck.

    I bought a 55 265 a couple of years ago, I recently decided to go another route and will be selling the 265 soon if anyone's interested. Pretty cheap.

    Someone here mentioned a 210 hp 265. The 210 hp version of the 265, was sold by Chevy in a 56 Corvette with a solid lifter cam, and 4 bbl. (205 hp version came in full size body cars/wagons, etc....had hydraulic lifters) Same engine except for solid lifter cam. Made a big difference in performance. (specs for cam were different.)
    Used to race a 210 hp 56 sedan (see avatar), when NHRA allowed the Vette engine in full size cars. That was a long time ago.

    No, another engineer in Duntov’s group did that, his name was Denny Davis, just another of the unsung heroes behind the boss in any organization. And even if his name was common knowledge saying “I’m running a Davis 30/30.” wouldn’t have the cool factor would it?

    57 265s use 57 283 casting, should be thick cylinder walls.

    I didn’t think that early of a casting would have the provision for mounting the starter to the block.

    Would that have been the 078 cam?

    I've got a tripe two-barrel intake for the 265, proper carbs too if anybody is interested in going that way.

    To the best of my knowledge, if you had a 283 with a Turboglide transmission, the starter did mount to the block. Someone can verify or debunk this statement since I don't know if it is fact.

  14. I have a 57 283 that was originally bolted to a turbo glide. Can't say if it actually had a block mounted starter as it was swapped into a 55 bel air in 1960 and bolted to a manual 3 speed with od. But I does have starter mount holes on the block

    All 57 283’s were drilled and tapped for block mounted starters because they had no idea what trans was going to end up behind it along the ***embly line.
     
  16. I guess I could flip the block over and hunt for ancient witness marks from a starter removed almost 70 years ago. Really need to get the block out and cleaned up a bit for the machine shop anyway

    Well, because I'm just crazy enough to keep it in the range of a 265. If I do decide to make a 283, I have to 57 era forged factory cranks and a set of standard bore 283 pistons with 4 valve reliefs and a set of 270/283 standard bore pistons with 2 valve reliefs that I can use. Yes, there is no replacement for displacement but I think you can make a 265 run good with more modern parts than the good old days.

    I had several 55's and lots of 56's back in the 60's and 70's. (Raced a 56 in NHRA stock cl***. - AVATAR) Had a garage full of extra 56 265 engines, and spare blocks. We raced a 265 4 bbl with 3 speed trans.
    In the upper Midwest I don't recall ever seeing a yellow 56 engine/block.. etc Maybe I just don't remember it, but ....

    The only block that might have been yellow and wasn't Chartreuse like an early 57 265 could have been in a truck. Truck engines were all together different colors and I have yet to find concrete answers as to what colors they were painted in Tri Five trucks. It would just be cool to have an early 57 that is actually Chartreuse, then I guess I could say I truly have one of each! I need my head examined!
