Hot Rods "Mishawaka Missile", '57 Nomad drag car. And a Studebaker crew cab hauler. Who knows more about it?

Came across this photo that was shared to another site. Stude didn't build any production crew cab trucks. Anybody know more about it or the Nomad?

Good old days. Reminds me of seeing an Indy car being trucked in on the back of a pickup truck, sort of the way folk up here haul snowmobiles.

  3. Mishawaka is the town adjacent to South Bend "home of Studebaker"

Any chance the Nomad is Stude powered?

I own the 57 Nomad...I bought it last year. It's been converted back to its original condition. Unfortunately when I got it the lettering and the paint had been removed......but its still awesome!

  6. That's my dad, John C. Cocquyt, and the Nomad he drag raced in the early '70s. The car was recently restored and he was invited to see it.

Tracy, thanks for chiming in! Can he shed any light on the truck?

  9. According to the man pictured in the image above, Studebaker built around 15 crew cab trucks each year. The one seen above was originally purchased by B&O Railroad. John bought it from a racer in Elkhart who put a 396 Chevy engine and four-speed truck transmission in it. It was Stude from the back of the cab forward and D500 Dodge in the back with a two-speed rear end. It had a Chevelle SS interior and was a three-door cab with an oversized right rear door that was production on ambulances and hearses.
