I am slowly working on an old (1962) La Dawri Daytona. It has Henry J chassis which by now has been rusted, modified, mangled, etc. The car sat outside for a lot of years and was not a pretty sight. I have so far cut out the rusted center of the frame and welded in new rails, removed the engine and rear axle, welded up many extra holes, and installed a Volvo 240 rear axle. I have a Volvo 1800 cc engine in it with the Volvo 4 speed transmission. I was wondering if there are any other people still messing around with these old kit cars or am I the only one stupid enough to do it?
https://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/threads/i-just-bought-a-la-dawri-california.1272453/ did you search?
Yep, @Nads ! There have been a couple other threads about ones for sale. Since your****le is so broad, I don't know how much help you will get, but a lot of the skills and work to rebuild one is going to be shared.
Thanks Squirrel, no I hadn't searched but should have. Nad's car is really great! I wonder if he still has it.
Wow - wire wheels and a flathead Ford V8! Does he know the manufacturer of the body? What chassis is it on? It needs a sleeker windshield though. Transverse leaf spring in the front - single brake master cylinder - stuff I can relate to!
Rudge-style wires! These bodies come out of the waves the Ferrari 166MM Barchetta made in the world of specials. For a while everyone was trying to turn Austin Sevens and Ford Pops into little Barchettas (Barchettini?) — and of course likewise, at a slightly larger scale, on American chassis.
The windshield can fold back, or fold forward, leaving two semi circular windscreens. We paid $75 for it back around ‘67-‘68. Has a built in tow bar, and we towed it home with our ‘41 Chevy pickup truck (which he also still has). Had it running and driving in a coupla days. The seller told us that it was built to run the “panamerica” race…
Geoff Hacker is the "go to" on his "Undiscovered Classics"/ "Forgotten Fiberglass" site! Maybe you can find some answers thru him....
