I have used a notched screwdriver to remove Stromberg power valves, but I recently read in a Stromberg how-to article the recommendation of using the "proper tool". Checked with some dealers and no one has ever seen one. I have read that Snap On offers such a tool, but I have had no luck with searches so far. Anyone got anything to add? Thanks.

I always used a notched screwdriver. I bet the “ tool “ is close to what you are using.

Here are a couple of pictures of Snap-On tools for Holley (4000/Teapot) power valves. The larger one is an MC-127, the smaller one is an MC-128.

This picture shows how the tools engage a power valve. The centers of the tools keep the valve pin in place (closed position) and protect it when the valve is being removed.

I have not tried either tool on a Stromberg 97 power valve, yet. But, it looks like either would work. I’ll have to pop open one of my Strombergs to check! :)
Or, as others have done, a clearanced screwdriver would work as long as it does not press on the pin.

    Hello,

When we had 6 Strombergs on our first 283 SBC motor with Jahns Pistons and an Isky Cam, we did not have a special tool for adjusting the carburetors. We had the choice between dual 4 barrel carbs or 6 Strombergs to top off our 283 SBC build. Besides the port/polished heads, the motor went together fine and it took a while to adjust all of the carbs.

But, it did start on the first crank and ran well around the block in our 1940 Willys Coupe. My brother went through the gears gently then after a couple of blocks of running and turning, he found the last street near the Los Angeles River and there, he stomped on the gas pedal. The sounds of the 6 carbs coming on full bore all at once was tremendous.

But all the time we had the 6 Strombergs, the tool the speed shop had made for us, was a small screwdriver.

We even ran the same 6 Strombergs on top of the 671 blower with some adjustments and it was a powerful set up. In addition to the modified 671 supercharger on a larger 292 c.i. blower spec motor we kept the 6 Strombergs as the Hilborn Injectors were a little beyond our reach at the time. We****embled a completely new motor for round two of our Willys Coupe build.

But, Hilborn Injectors for a street legal coupe? Allowable in class, as per rules, but not reality for daily driving...

Thanks guys for the info, pics and 6 carb story! I've learned that Stromberg never offered a tool for power valve changing,...... but Snap On did. TMC-43 for power valve and TMC-38 for bowl plugs, I've picked up one of each off that auction site.

    Stromberg T-20201

EDIT: Carter T109-61 is a better tool, and more common than the Stromberg.

the Stromberg power valve works best for me with the stem removed and soldered shut according the full throttle A/F reading on the dyno. then a flat bladed screw driver works fine....but I live in the banger zone
