Hi all, wanted to introduce a project I picked up last year. I’ve been working on it for a while and upload some more pictures. It is a 1956 Oldsmobile 88 2 door hardtop. It was pretty stripped down, I think someone had stripped it to restore it but never started any work. The plan is a traditional styled g***er. I picked up a 454 and a TH400 for a power plant and Ford F1 truck axle for the front end.
I also picked up a 4 door parts car to go with, the windshield alone was worth the price of the 4 door. A lot of the parts from the 4 door would have been very difficult to get for the project
Short work was made of the 4 door to remove any parts I needed and eliminate the rest. As much as I hate destroying a car, the floor and rockers in the car were completely rotten and would have needed a lot of work to even be road worthy
This is the look I am aiming for with the car but white with vintage race car car style lettering and numbering
I had to put the suspension from the 4 door under the 2 door in order to get it home. Also mocked the fenders on and had it looking more like a complete car
Great start to a project! The 4 door sedan windshield won't fit your hardtop. Are you keeping all the side trim? Hood bird?
I plan to keep as much of the trim as I can. I have a hood emblem from a 55 that’s slightly different so I’ll have to try and find the correct one. I didn’t realize the windshields were different but I got plants of other parts from the donor car anyway. At least I’ll have a full gl*** set from a four door if anybody is looking lol.
Once I got the car in the garage I was able to remove the factory front suspension and mock in the Ford F1 axle. My aim was to keep the front axle as far forward as I was able to. The spring location wasn’t terrible in relation to the frame.
I think the best price for cl***ic gl*** is from Auto City Cl***ic https://www.autocitycl***ic.com/195...ies-88-98-jobs-3037dx-3037-sdx-3637d-3637-sd/
the off topic forum is for post 1965 cars or earlier cars built in a modern fashion (EFI , LS, etc). So if this build is getting a bunch of modern parts on it then this is the proper place. If it is being built as a mid 60's style g***er then it belongs on the main board
FWIW the windshield from a 54-46 Buick Special and Century two door and four door hardtops should fit, they shared the same basic body shell. The Olds 98, Buick Super and Roadmaster were different. Chevrolet and Pontiacs were different, compare the curve at the A Pillar, they were built on a different body shell. Save that back gl***, it fits both two door and four door sedan Buick Specials, Century’s and Oldsmobile 88’s.
My apologies, is it able to be moved over or should I delete it and start again on the main board? Thanks
