Great collection of old racing decals.
The Hurst / Airheart one sure brings back some memories.

Ahh, the old Wynns stickers. When I was in elementary school back in the long, long ago, the dad of one of my friends worked for Wynns. My friend would bring stacks of those to school. They were stuck on everything until they figured out who was supplying them. Chain link fence posts, swings, tetherball poles, they were everywhere. Wish I still had a couple.

    Katuna:
Wynn's over the years as made over a 100's different styles of racing decals.
Some are very rare while others are very common and readily available and easy to find.

Boy that brings back some memories from the early 60's.
My grade school was next door to a Union 76 station where they gave those bright orange
76 balls to customers to put on their cars' radio antennas, we had them stuck on any chain link fence bolts that had long exposed threads.
I also remember stopping by our small town auto parts store on the way home from grade school (we pestered the counter guy every day), for some reason all we could get were STP stickers, we had those things everywhere.

It is interesting that many old decals kind of take on a life of their own over the years.
In some way's it's kind of like many of the cars that had great old names painted on their sides and became famous for their names. Back in the 60's many times I knew the car but did not really know who drove the car!

I think some how when we all look at old racing decals out minds flash back to the first time we ever saw the decal and we remember where we were and all the fun we had and even the smells of fuel in the air and burning rubber!

The Sonny's logo reminds me of a couple screw ups I made when there were new client presentations. I would always include a new logo and point out the reasons why the old one should be replaced, only to be informed that a brother, sister in law, daughter or what ever had designed it. Changed my tactics after losing potential clients three times!

Thanks for posting the link to Hemmings about the old decals.

I have always found decal are more then just a simple decal on a car window or a sheet of paper.

I have talked with hundreds of people on the phone over the past 20 years when they call me and many of the stories they tell me about just what the decals means to them and where they were are really interesting.

I had one lady who could not stop crying on the phone while telling me how much the Utica Rome Dragway meant to her because that is where she met her husband back in the early 60's.

I have gotten many phone calls from the children of some of the top drag racers in the country from back int he 60's who wanted to tell me stories about their father and what it was like growing up traveling the country.

Decals really are a look into the past and if only they could talk what a story they would tell us all.

  24. This was trademarked and owned by Hurst Shifters back in the day. I don't think they ever did anything with it. But at least they protected against others using the concept.
They gave it up years ago, and it's now public domain for anybody to use.
