Technical How can Edelbrock carb fit 63 Impala w/327 manifold?

Hey guys I’m installing a Edelbrock carb onto my 63 impala with a stock 327 manifold. It doesn’t look right. What do I need to get to make it fit properly? Thanks

 

Edelbrock performer intake. Or the RPM Performer.
I don’t think I’d want to run an adapter, even if ones made.

Edit: If not corroded up, a used intake will work as good as a new one. Just won’t be a clean.

 

Taper adapters are made and reasonable. Off shore manifolds new are also. Used (take your pick) are on many sites. My choice would be a stock Rochester 4 GC.

 

....or it would work without an adapter on a factory 327/300 HP intake manifold. If you do that, be sure to run the stainless steel heat plate under the carb, or the raw exhaust that comes out of the two heat riser holes will warp it.

 

There are 1/2" thick adapter plates made to do this, it was very commonly done in the 60's and 70's. I have several if you need one.

 

Is this what I need?

 

If you use an older manifold make sure to use a 2732 flat plate adapter, even old Edelbrock intakes have problems with Edelbrock carbs.

& added threaded to 5/16 bolt holes
To 3/8 's & 7/16 & used step stud's .

Not perfect solution and IF Not looking for max power being under 300 hp it would work,

One correct gasket for intake ,
Then One heat shield
Then another Gasket later Q Jet or
holley gasket ,
Then Spacer
Then Edelbrock gasket
Then Carb ,,,

Correct GM intake for a Carter AFB or Edelbrock is 3844459. I bought one last year for $10 in
good condition on CL. Or, use your current intake with a Rochester 4GC, as shown above.

I have a new Edelbrock 1403 carb. Im not getting a different carb. The old carb was a Carter WCFB. This is a pic of the stock intake

 

Is there anyway I can use a 1403 Edelbrock on this intake?

Forget the old carb or any other carb. I will be using a brand new Edelbrock 1403 with the exhisting intake. Is the speedway adapter going to fit for sure because I’m going to buy it?

 

Okay the intake will have to be changed out. There’s no way it’ll work. Okay gm 3844459 intake is what I need. I haven’t gotten to the choke yet. Just trying to get this********* thing to fit.

 

There's a bunch of those intakes on eBay.

 

Is Edelbrock aluminum going to be better?

The answer to your questions have been answered about 6 times above. Please read them carefully and you will find the information that you need. Do you have a reading comprehension issue?
The aluminum verses the cast iron will not make any difference in your power level.

Under normal, everyday driving conditions, the carb and adaptor will work. If you have the carb, use it with the adaptors listed from Speedway Motors. Yes in race conditions, the carb may not be right and adaptors do impede air flow, but for normal driving, you probably won't notice.
Just be sure when you install the adaptor, there are no obvious sharp edges or protrusions that don't need to be there. You may need to do some carb tuning with jets and rods, but until you get some drive time, run as is.

You'll want a dual plane [sometimes called 180°] intake.
There is marginal HP gains from Alloy Aftermarket to Factory cast.

The biggest advantage with an alloy aftermarket intake is "heat soak" issues .
Edelbrock carbs have a reputation for hot start or heat soak issues so a good aluminium intake helps remedy this issue.

 

He wants to use the new carb and intake manifold he has.. . and .. he's not competing at Daytona looking for the last ounce of horsepower at 9000 rpms.

And you want to overcomplicate things further with a relay on the choke? Geezus , someone has to call out bs when a person needs basic help.

 

The short answer is YES, the simple adapter from Speedway will get your Edelbrock 1403 bolted onto your existing manifold. Be careful with the gaskets, make sure there aren’t any air leaks like those in your first picture with the open gasket. The correct gaskets should be included if you buy the kit shown from Speedway.
After driving it for a while you might need to make mixture adjustments. Consult the Edelbrock book that came with the carb for simple changes. I think the book is online if you didn’t get one.
A better intake manifold will help you get the most out of the new carb but it’s not absolutely necessary. Your car will be fine with the carb and adapter.
I understand your frustration, answers online can offer so much extra info that it gets confusing. Everyone is just trying to help.

I really appreciate all the help even if some people add more information. I’m just ignorant and thought a new Edelbrock was plug and play. Isn’t a 63 impala w/327 one of the most common cars? There should be an adapter but why do they sell them if they’re only going to get the car running? Doesn’t make sense. Then there’s the intake. Want aftermarket carb ? Yeah you’ll have to spend $200 on another intake to make $300 carb work. I’m going to try the adapter because it’s a cheaper and easier route. If it doesn’t work then I’ll change the intake.

 

Keep in mind the two adapters posted by Moriarity and myself. Meaning, Moriarity post is based on experience and what I posted is based on your wording as to what factory carb you took off. Read all the tech specs (bolt patterns) for both adapters as well as all the Q&A’s provided from Speedway. Doing such will be of great importance in educating one’s self.
