Finished and painted exhaust recently, so happy with how its turned out. Started on fuel tank today, decided to go with aluminum, a few pics, Glen
A few pics of todays progress, fabbed up tank baffles and machined fuel sender unit bung ( I paid $45.00. for a sender mount kit but ended up making my own as mount kit was ****ing useless ). I need to practice my alloy welding as its been a while, approx. 3-4 years since I welded aluminum. Glen
Fuel tank is still a work in progress, I ended up buying a new tig welder as my old unit had seen better days. They did not have a suitable foot pedal in stock so I needed to order one, when I receive the pedal I will start welding the tank, most of the tank is fabricated and just needs to be stuck together. While waiting for my pedal to arrive I fabbed up a cover for my rear crossmember, I also mounted my modified fuel cap, a few pics Glen
Welded up fuel tank today, still need to fab mounts and leak test and have certified, overall happy with result. Glen
Fuel tank done for now, I just need to pressure test myself before sending it out to be certified, today I started working on my firewall for distributor clearance and making my gearbox cover. My plan is to glue some 2 inch by 1/8 flat to the underside and bolt transmission cover to it ( this is how I fabbed the rear crossmember cover ). The cover will be made out of 16 gauge cold rolled sheet, I will also incorporate a provision for my Winters shifter. I was going to do in fibergl*** but like the idea of a removable cover, a few pics Glen
Nice! I had to "flip" the rear U-bolts so the nuts were on top to clear the quick change rear. Your mileage may vary.
You might want to add a couple gussets to the neck. Lots of twisting and pull when that gets removed.
Filler neck should be ok, lots of support in that area, pic doesn't show it, fuel cap side is machined out of solid, Glen
A few pics of recent progress, I decided to fibregl*** area for distributer clearance, I will still fab a removable trans tunnel, a few pics, Glen
Next job was to mount my sidewinder shifter, it turned out that the shifter sat to low to reach and would have to be raised on some sort of mount. When I started to work out where it needed to be it was clear that it would not look that good and be difficult to operate if drag racing when strapped in, so I decided to fab a box to mount shifter inside and fab my own levers etc, I am unsure if I love the result but I do like it ( and no one else has one like it ), I still needed a reverse lockout function which is the reason for the second lever. I am also unsure of the shift knobs as the only aluminum rod I had was 30mm in diameter - I may fab some new knobs but will wait and see, I still need to mount cable etc. The Shifter still has all the functions of the original unit except the reverse lockout, a few pics, Glen
No way will any cup holders or any other modern **** will be in this hotrod, I cannot stand cup holders in hotrods, I feel they look so out of place. Shifter is not quite finished, I may put the original sidewinder name back on the side ( the one in the first pic ) or hunt the internet for a cool sticker for the side of shifter housing. Glen
Shifter on hold at present as waiting for new Knobs to be delivered although cable ***embly all done now. Next job is to install 2 speed wiper kit, today I fabbed up a windshield frame out of some old frames I purchased of a local hot rodder ( they were supposed to suit a 34 but they were all different ), there are 3 different sections all with different profiles but its gunna work. still to work out how to hinge and install winder ***embly, a few pics, Glen
A few pics of todays progress, started mounting scissor winder and reinforced roof area for windscreen top hinges, Also purchased a pair of Holley carbs at a swap meet recently. Glen
