Los Angeles Grauman’s Theater in Hollywood.

    Hello,
In 1965, I was home from college for the winter break and met my old friend from earlier years. We had been in communication with each other during the time I was away from Long Beach. As a gesture of continued friendship, we decided to go out to dinner and a movie. It was not just a movie, but “the” movie of the year.

    Doctor Zhivago
: (December 22, 1965): Starring Omar Sharif and Julie Christie, this film became a worldwide phenomenon.

Doctor Zhivago was playing exclusively at the Grauman’s Theater and it would be a nice drive to go to our old stomping grounds. We used to use “Hollywood” as a destination for cruising down the avenues, Hollywood Boulevard and Sunset Blvd all the way to the ocean in Santa Monica. Then come back down the Coast Highway through the coastal cities back to Long Beach and Belmont Shore.

Wait, what happened to Bixby Knolls? That time period was over and the next generation was already filling up the parking spots for their time at the local drive-in hot rod locations. It was a good time, but now the activity for us, was in a different location, with new folks to meet and enjoy the company that is/was different than the teenage years. YRMV

But, the timeless road trips to Hollywood still rang in our ears as a destination, along with the coastal highway cruise. Palos Verdes looked much better at night with the moon shining on the surface while Catalina Island sat what seemed like a baseball throw away in the ocean, off the coast. "26 miles across the sea..."

    Note:
The Grauman’s Theater was a teenage destination, too, but during our “older” days, it too still had some attractions that lit up the faces of those that had not gone there or wanted to see an exclusive movie playing there. Yes, we were older folks going to a movie in Hollywood. But, times moved on and a famous destination still rang true in our “First Run” grand opening nights.
