Does anyone have an exploded diagram of a 50 Olds 88 Hydromatic steering column? I need to modify one for a newer transmission with the Park position and want to see what I am getting into.

All you'll need to know will be down on the shift detents just above the steering box.

I bought a 50-51 Olds factory manual and there is no pictures in it on the steering column.

I recently put electric power steering in my 50 olds 88 . had to cut out 12 inches of the column for the unit . That is a very complicated unit . original transmission only has 4 positions ( N - Drive - low - and reverse ) . Your new one will need 6 positions ( Park - Rev - N - Drive - 2 - 1 ) . Detent is down near the floor inside column . I,m not sure the shifter has enough travel . A late model column might be the ticket . P . S . power steering made it a new car !

Do you have info on the electric PS you used on your 50 Olds? I would love to see how you did it. Since it's off topic maybe PM me.

Sfowler, post some pictures over on the “Off Topic” board, it would be of interest to a bunch of us I’m sure. I’ve been thinking of power steering for my Stude pickup with a Plymouth front clip and when I install the new engine I intend to fix the steering column too.
