I have a 40 Ford Standard Coupe, with what I believe is a 1940 steering box, anybody know what the reason the black wire is going into the bottom side of the steering box. The other end goes to the silver relay?

    Thank You

Is the fluid in the steering box separate of the wire, as I plan on checking and adding some type of grease if it needs it. Haven’t determined which type yet.

The 4 bolt cover on the end that covers the worm bearing, it has a br*** or steel tube that houses the wire. The tube is long enough to go through the oiling cavity. No need to worry about adding more fluid. Leave a little room, for when the grease expands from heat. John Deer cornhead grease is used a lot.[IMG]

I just pull the pipe plug on old steering boxes and install a zerk fiting. Corn head grease works great.

Horns don’t need grease. . Have 525 box in a 32. Was NOS when installed 30 years ago. Will it have grease are heavy oil in it?
