I doubt their day is as bad as yours. They are probably looking up at the roots of the gr*** above. Welcome to the misery of a mechanic and having to deal with the "Engineering Department" or the "Accountant". They both are notorious about thinking up a better way to do something or spending a $1M to save a penny.
Been traveling a bit for work but got back on Tuesday. Finally finished the axle install… just gotta do some minor adjustments to tie rod and steering, but I’m digging the stance!
Alright… new development with my cursed truck. I got a new starter solenoid but i think i really just needed to charge the battery i haven’t been able to drive it so battery is low. I tested it at autozone. It idles really high. But the kicker is that is spitting oil through the exhaust! It never did that. I don’t really know what else to look at. Here’s a couple pics. It smokes a lot cause of the oil but its so much that it actually pools. Any ideas what to look at? Only changes i made was the unilite mallory distributor and the dual carbs. Still not able to run it successfully. I pulled the plugs and most of them have oil. So i figure rings are **** now. Maybe valves?
Making small progress where I can. New canister installed. Made new tubes for it and added the electrical oil sensor pressure. I took oil out and was full of gasoline. Doing a new oil change. Took off oil pan to clean and paint. Im gonna inspect my bearings while i have that off. My theory is my carbs had the wrong power valves. YyI ordered 2 3.5 PVs. That should help not fill the engine with gas. I have a new offenhauser fuel pump so doubt thats the issue.
Many have mentioned the need to use certain power valves, and or how they need to be checked. Maybe make a new and separate topic to get more eyes on your fuel in the oil issue.
I was kinda surprised no one commented on the heads and how much carbon you have on them! You can't even see the spark plugs there's so much fuel getting in those cylinders! If you bought PV's for Holley 94's, you're on the right path. Hopefully they came with new gaskets as that can also be a problem. Someone somewhere at somepoint made gaskets that seemed to be made out of a lead alloy... those are my favorites, but I don't know where I got the ones I had. I'm not sure where you're getting your carb parts, but Charlie Price has EVERYTHING for those carbs. https://www.vintagespeed.com/ I did not watch your videos, but by looking at your carbon issue, you had to have PVs hanging open. It's a catch 22... if the engine isn't happy, and it doesn't build adequate vacuum, this causes the PVs to open, which exacerbates your problems. I bet that black stuff coming out the exhaust was raw fuel & carbon. Did the liquid eventually evaporate? Depending on the engine cubic inches, the cam, etc. you might also try a single PV and a plug. A stock-ish setup doesn't need a bunch of fuel thrown at it. But that's probably a little later when you've got it dialed in more. 3blap.
so thats what it is huh... yeah I think i put gas in one day I turn the engine and it idled for a bit I was trying to tune my carbs, but when I looked again the tank was empty! probably not good lol. I'm waiting for my oil pan gaskets and power valves, but hopefully this helps me dial it in. I will try 2 3.5PVs and if that is too much still I have a PV plug so I will play with those
The other things to check are the fuel pressure as Patsurf said and make sure your floats are working properly. If you don't control the amount of fuel coming into the carbs, it'll just push the extra fuel into the engine (as well as leak externally). Had a buddy who's engine was running like ****, he pulled the 94 top off, and I held it as he was looking inside the carb for an obstruction. I noticed that the float was full of fuel... so we swapped it one out of his dummy carbs and voila! Fixed. His float seemed to soak up fuel when it was up to operating temp! So, check over everything, even as simple as it might be. Fuel pressure is supposed to be 1.75-2.25psi, if memory serves me right. It's stupid low pressure. And yeah, when it's free flowing gas through the engine like that, you will go through fuel very rapidly! It's surprising even though they're small carbs and a small engine... Good luck & keep us posted! 3blap.
Repainted oil pan went back in! I torqued everything to 15 ft/lbs i think thats what i saw online. New gaskets and new bolts. Hopefully mitigates leaks. I kinda want to repaint the whole block now i also took my carbs apart and did the new power valves i did check them for leaks they looked really good!
Alright got new plugs. Put new oil in. Adjusted the carbs a bit and had it run really good! Took it around the block just to see how it runs. Looks like the shroud actually helps a ton! No more overheating. It feels under load tho. And when in neutral its very heavy. Almost like something is stuck. I’ll put it on stands and look at my steering setup again i have a feeling theres more to do there, but engine wise I’m pretty happy. Here’s a video of how it sounds. —The clicking u hear is the fan hitting the shroud. Still need to bolt radiator down. https://youtube.com/shorts/2cCL8MpWYwg?si=k-1iMeg6nGpcLEUE
That's awesome dude! Congrats! Check your brakes to make sure they're not dragging. Might just need a little adjustment... 3blap.
They sure do! Seems like the t-shirt fibergl*** shroud made the trick! Thanks for showing me that Gary! It was very obvious… engine was hovering around 180. I turned it off and it went to like 220. I turned it back on and it went down to 180!
Now that i think about it i took off the shifter to paint it… maybe i didnt align the forks correctly
I went to a fair amount of work to get rid of the electric one. Also went to 3 pedals but my knees still work.
I'm guessing you're not running a Ford 3spd toploader then? I think if you ***emble them wrong, they just don't shift as they're jammed up. Listened to the video this time... that fan hitting the shroud threw me off... even though you said that was happening. Hopefully you fixed that already... that would drive me nuts in 30 seconds. 3blap.
I do have a 3 speed toploader! it seems to shift fine..., but in neutral I can't move it. I'll check brakes and lift it and check each tire... weird issue lol and yeah the fan thing just happened to start when i took the video. It normally doesn't do that, but I do need to take some time to address it.
What radiator cap do you have on that radiator? Do you know where the timing is set or how much timing you're getting? I feel like you might have too much timing with it blowing off steam and running hot and high idle... I know it's a fresh startup and probably needs a little more dialing in before it's 100%... I guess it could be pushing out what to find its equilibrium. Stock flathead is like 3lb cooling pressure. an off the shelf 7lb'er is probably appropriate enough, but I wonder if it's sealing at all? But, I'd check timing first... maybe retard it until it stops overheating and see how it feels driving around the block. *Full disclosure, I don't know where mine is set as my timing light doesn't seem to want to work, but it drives nicely without detonating or running hot... so we're good. Sorry, some of that was thinking out loud, but I think it might still be somewhat helpful, so I'll leave it. 3blap.
i have a 7lb cap. and my initial timing is like 10 degrees I think. until 26 or so by 2000? i dont remember what I set it to... used graph F in my mallory distributor. I could retatrd it a bit and see how it behaves
FWIW, I would just start with stock timing and go from there. I believe it's 4 deg BTDC... which I believe is the bump on the pulley. You can always go back and bump it up a little from there... 3blap.
