Hello I'm trying to see if I can uncover some history to my Roadster. I purchased it from Rosemary Davenport in 2013, she & her husband Bob had owned the Roadster since 1950. Rosemary told me that after Bob p***ed away (2009) she said "seemed like everyone from the club wanted to buy that car from me, but I wasn't ready". I'm reaching out trying to find which club/members she was referring to. Club must have been from Oregon or Washington area? Any help would be great appreciated. More info: The Davenports moved to San Mateo/Redwood City because Bob was an airplane mechanic (SFO). They did this move around 1953. Thank you
I don't recall names as well as I do photographs. Perhaps there are others like myself that would be greatly benefitted by the addition of a photograph or likeness of the car in question. It might trigger a memory and shed light on your search. Just an idea.
Here's a picture from when we first took the tarps off her. Was wrapped like a burrito. All other steel parts were in the garage.
The cut off frame horns and square crossmeber might tell the story. That and the sunken licenseplate.
First thing is for someone to dig out Albert Drakes books that show the 50/53 time frame. I don't have any from that timeframe myself.
The work in that area with the Z'd frame and the sheet metal around it was and still is high level too.
Thank you, a quick online search I see a book ***le Portland Pictoral: The 1950's. Never heard of Albert Drake but finding out he really do***ented the North West scene. Thank you for the lead.
I have this information on the Road Knights from Davenport Washington. They were not formed until 1954 though and I did not see Bobs name listed
only early club I can think of that fit that era was the Slo Poks as they formed in 1952 in the Vancouver area. the MHRC (Multnomah Hot Rod Council) out of Portland formed in 55/56 and comprised of a handful of Portland/Vancouver area clubs. Not much do***entation in the early 50s of those clubs.
Well, If they moved to California in '53 and Bob died in 2009, the club you're looking for is probably in the bay area.
Back Several years ago I used to see Albert Drake at the indoor car shows in Portland selling his books and talk to him once in a while. He was one of the guys who do***ented the Northwest hot rod and custom scene.
When I was purchasing the car from Rosemary she specifically said club was from up north where they once lived and Bob was a part of that club (even though car wasn't a driver).
The family name was Davenport, not the name of the town in Washington. Not sure the Davenport, Wa. town and club has much to do with it.
Yup, I knew that, just posting the info I have from an old PNW club in case it rattled someone's memory
Maybe this info might help: The Davenports purchased the car from RK Wasella. I've tried reaching out to that family from Amboy Wa. with 0 response. Appreciate those that have chimed in...
I'm still on the DL, dude! I had an MRI done and they said they didn't dint anything remarkable. I was a bit offended. I love Amboy, I have several friends up that way. I'm pretty sure they require all citizenry have at least 4 long guns and 2 pistols. I'm a member of Amboy's Facebook page (good deals on ammo), I can ask if anyone knows Wasellas.
The Slo-Poks have a pretty complete roster with a back page of those no longer wearing their Coats (you don't want to end up there). There's only one way out of this organization, and that's in a box. Neither of those names are listed anywhere on the roster.
I have much of our Clubs history archived in my files including member lists and the roster of our first reunion (30 year) in 1982 which included all Slo Poks members and close friends dating back to 1952. There was never a member or ***ociate with the last name of Davenport listed anywhere in my info. This is not saying that he was not a local but it was very unlikely that he was around the Slo Poks in those days. Amboy is considered backwoods now but was really out in the sticks back then, mostly Loggers back in those days.
Backwoods and Apostolic, that last name fits the area. There is likely kin of the gentleman if is no longer with us that may have pictures. Apostolic Lutherans have HUGE families and helped settle this entire area and are still at it.
His full name was Robert Cecil Davenport and he was a carpenter at least in his early years. The where he lived part spaced each ten years was frim census reports. It looked like he moved from Canby to Portland before 1940.
