Recently saw a medium blue Ford truck and 50’s style teal green Chevy truck done in a satin type paint. Both were very well done and looked very nice. However it occurred to me that the satin paint jobs don’t seem as popular as they were a few years ago. What are your experiences and opinions? Is satin paint hard to maintain or less durable?

With the cost of good shiny paint I think it will be around for awhile.

Paint is very trendy. I don’t know that there’s anything wrong with any of them. It’s just something that changes all the time. Wasn’t that long ago every new traditional style car was an earthy broken tone. I’m ***uming because Toyota and a few others put out a whole pallet of those cars out on the road for you to see.

  6. Depends on style

I still see new builds using satin or satin accents

I dig it on the right build

I like satin, it helps keep the 80's fuchsia and turquois with orange and black squigly ribbon paint scheme that matches the interior out of the picture.

When I think of things satin a lot of items come to mind. Automotive paint jobs aren't near the top of that list.

Pirate, my 36 Chevy will wear it's satin Rustoleum till the day I die. When I first built it 46 years ago it was red and black lacquer, sanded and buffed to perfection. Pain in the *** as far as I was concerned. About 15 years ago, I sanded it all down and brushed/rolled on the Rustoleum satin hunter green and black. I have enjoyed my pick up so much more now because I don't worry about anything happening to it t hat can't be fixed by brushing more paint on! As for durability, it lives in my shop so the finish has faired very good. My '36 Ford was black single stage, if I'd have epoxy primed it or shot it with Hot Rod Flats it would have been so much more relaxing to own. At this final phase of my life, I would rather drive the **** out of my truck that worry about a paint job... Just my opinion, AND my car, so be it what it is ... like the saying goes"theres an *** for every seat" Mitch

    I still like it.

  12. Are satin pants losing their appeal? That is the question. It all depends on the owners preference and of course the vehicle itself.

Satin paint helped that guy build his car in the garage with limited funds do it yourself, because he could not afford or was not interested in the over built pay someone else street rods of today.
Which the HAMB build was strongly about when I came in.

Here's mine painted in 2011. I'm not tired of it yet. Easy to maintain being base coat clear coat.

I like the look of satin paint jobs. As far as I can remember they have been around for a long time. It is only recently that some of the new cars have had them as options. The 58 Belvedere that I had I painted in satin black. I don't care about trends, and I do what I like on my cars.

  18. Problem is the height of the modern rockabilly craze from around 2000-2012 resulted in a m***ive amount of satin cars. You'd see billet queens with former high end paint jobs redone satin with no other changes to the car. Kinda like the current ls craze. They were "hip" at first but are becoming a me too trend. That said a crazy glossy flaked roof over a satin body does look killer

It depends on the car and how it looks. But for the most part I go for the gloss

Give me satin paint over cleared over faux patina....but that wasn't the question.
I kind of like satin paint look on some cars, even when accented with the same color in gloss.
We can't get hung up on other car owners preferences on style, after all it is their car.

Mine is currently in Black primer, so I guess I'm part of the phase, but I don't worry too much about fitting in and riding whatever the current fashion is.

I am with ya on the glossy clear over patina thing. I dig the driver look and satin with a bit of realistic patina makes for less stress when abusing it than worrying about a chip, smudge or scratch. Love great paint, hate stress.

There is a difference when it comes to choosing the right color for any project, how ever when choosing the right flavor of a snow cone, well I like all of the flavors!

In many cases satin paint reminds me of either cheap paint job, or not finished yet.

    I'll take my satin paint

    Screenshot_20251024_014928_Gallery.jpg

Over this shiny paint any day

But, I'm sure (like the other owner) I painted it for me, not popular opinion

Nothing wrong with satin. #1 reason, they are cheaper than new ones!
