I'll leave the t***el fringe alone for now, and let it continue falling apart.

Got the registration and insurance taken care of this morning. Played with the gas tank, it had about a gallon of slightly bad gas in it, I added a gallon of fresh gas, and drained it, then put in another 4 gallons of fresh gas. I borrowed the old battery from the Volvo. It started up and runs pretty well. Went for a little drive to the gas station. Drives like a dream! Seller said he needed to work on the clutch, as it chattered. I guess letting it sit for several years cured it, at least temporarily, because it works fine for me.

    Clutch?
I thought that thing had an automatic, what it needs is a 430 Lincoln and a four speed!

How many cars have you sold and bought back? I don’t think I’ve ever done that. I thought about it a couple of times but it never worked out.

Nope, won't work. They only make metric windshields.

Oh, kind of, but not quite. The "new" hood on mine is the same color as that one, but the rest of it is mostly different. They're both 4 door Rangers with the 292, which was the most common 59 Edsel made.

compare the data tags, nothing matches.

Anyways...the Edsel had been running poorly since I got it back. The carb was leaking, so I got a carb kit and installed it last fall, but it still ran bad...in fact, it got worse. I ended up getting involved with other stuff for a while, and finally decided to look at the Edsel again today.

I did a little troubleshooting and test driving, and it sure acted like the power valve, or something similar, was leaking. So I pulled off the carb, and sure enough the power valve compartment was filled with gas. Turns out the gasket that came in the carb kit was a bit too thin, so it would bottom out before compressing it, resulting in a little fuel leak ,just enough to make it totally undrivable.

    Working better now.

Good thing those old autolites is, they take holley jets till 63 model year. Many mine has really like few number bigger jets.

My impression is that many of the gaskets you get with the kits nowadays deteriorate very quickly with modern fuel, I found some viton O-rings that were the right size and are etahnol-safe and used that instead. Seems to work so far...

I've found that when stuff deteriorates with modern fuel, it's usually because I let it sit for a while...

but a paper gasket is still a paper gasket, if it's the right size, it will last OK and work well.

What I do if I’m not using Indian Head or Gasket cinch is I lightly coat the paper gasket with a light grease, seems to help the gasket from becoming brittle.

Way back in tech school, the engine cl*** instructor had all the students use white grease on both sides of gaskets except head gaskets. Made teardown to fix issues and reuse gaskets a lot easier! :D
I've tried the usual, chapstick on Holley bowl gaskets, etc. As Jim says regular use helps, but modern fuels are not designed for old seals and if they aren't as designed (thin) it's never going to work right.

X2. But the ***umption is that whatever fluid the gasket is supposed to seal would not dissolve the grease, and that is why I went to a completely different material for the PV gasket.

But it wouldn't matter if the power valve gasket leaked just a tiny bit, would it?

Vacuum would just pull the tiny bit of fuel away is all.

if it leaks just a tiny bit, vacuum pulls the fuel into the engine, and it runs rich.

    You have to define "tiny".

Tiny meaning what could seep through a paper gasket properly compressed but with no sealer.
Like less than a drop a minute, for instance.
I guess I should have said "seep", not "leak".
