Who makes the best ones? I'm thinking of doing a roadster pickup. I'm not a big fan of gl***, but trying to find a decent original steel body is almost impossible.
Brookeville, Their gl*** body's contain a high steel content. They may not be original, but neither is gl***.
Best is subjective. Price, quality, closest to original, original or aftermarket features wanted can all affect this. Also, shipping can enter into the selection. You don't mention what Year you want, which changes who makes them. There are a number for sale here, including new Brookeville. https://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum...pickup&o=relevance&c[***le_only]=1&c[node]=47
There is a pretty nice complete 28/29 rpu body, box and fenders posted locally on FB for $3500 Cdn (about $2500 USD). If your interested I can PM you with the link. @krylon32 has a steel Brookville '32 rpu listed here in the cl***ifieds for less that dealer cost.
Piece one together. Doors forward is a roadster or tourer. Just need the cab rear and pickup bed. You can get a fibregl*** cab rear panel. New steel pickup beds are quite cheap.
Wescott was wrapping up their operation a couple months ago. I don't know if anything is still available.
Read this again. It's a joke. Fewer and fewer people care if it's real steel. Many 'gl*** bodies are over 50 years old and antiques.
One of the best I've seen is C&W Components bodies with bonded steel structures, I think they do a 30-31 RPU. See, https://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/threads/my-new-new-ride.1275188/
It's no problem at all for Americans to bring a Ford body into the US from Canada because Ford is a US manufacturer, so no duty. I have brought a few 34-36 Fords across the border, with the last one through Port Huron, Michigan. It took literally less than 10 minutes to go thru there with a 34 Ford Phaeton basket case. My joke about Brookeville was obviously taken too seriously by some. My thought there is you are within driving distance to them and I don't think there will be a cheaper quality gl*** body for the price of the new steel cab.
Getting an old project car back into the States from Canada is pretty simple. It just takes a few forms, and a call ahead to the port of entry. A few years ago, a friend and I ******ed a '59 Mercury M100 Panel truck out of Winnipeg and brought it back to Minnesota. We crossed at Pembina. Coming back through, they looked over the do***ents, made sure they match the ones we faxed ahead, and sent us on our way. No one even opened the door on the trailer, or sent the dog around for a quick check. I could have had a ton and a half of Grade A Bolivian marching powder in there and no one would have been the wiser.
gary from cornhuskers has been trying to sell a brookeville body in the cl***ifieds for quite some time now
What’s the price difference between a gl*** body and a new Brookville? I know we don’t like to think we’ll ever sell our cars, but the resale value has surely got to be in your favor with a steel car.
I'm of the idea use which ever suits your price range or style or material preference. I like steel better but no matter how fancy Brookville bodies are they are a reproduction just like a gl*** body. Putting a ford emblem on one doesn't make it original... ...
