To me it doesn’t matter shiny, satin, or patina. What matters to me is if it isn’t prewar it doesn’t interest me. To each his own on their taste.

I like shiny gloss and I like chrome and will pay for both…my choice. Will I buy painted chrome or a satin finish car? Only after I send a photo to Moose and have him make it shiny gloss with chrome and I like it.

My truck was painted in 2022 with acrylic urethane, and turned out really shinny. The last thing I had painted was done with acrylic enamel and I kind of liked the level of shine, less then the urethane, but with more shine then the satin paints are.
The urethane was a lot more shiny then either me or my painter expected. I think the truck would have looked better with the shine of the acrylic enamel, but here we are. Its going to be really shiny until it dulls on its own, being waxed once or twice a year.
The cost difference between the enamel and the urethane was around $100 for the same color. I sprang the extra money because the urethane was suppose to hold up better to chips and scratches, and the truck gets driven a lot. Three years in, I have doubts concerning the chip resistance, doesn't seem to be much difference to me.

I was not aware satin paint had appeal.... Lol.

Honestly I don't dig it on old stuff. Did they use satin paint bitd? Looks contrived on an old ride to me.

    But do as though wilt....

I am kind of partial to the new but weathered look.

I definitely haven't seen as many satin cars around as I did 15 years ago. Certainly not any that were painted recently. Most I see now are either fully painted gloss or not painted at all.

I am mainly just not a fan of fads. Styles come and go when it comes to paint jobs, etc. Also, being a painter, if I’m going to the trouble of all the prep work, it will be shiny. If I want to just rough something in, I’ll just shoot it in a good primer and that may be the finish coat for a while. But, I still prefer shiny cars or, even better, original paint survivors like my 56.

I don't much care for satin paint. It was my late wife's finish of choice for practically every painted surface in all the houses we ever lived in. I'd be damned if I was going to walk out to the driveway and see a satin painted car too.

    I like cars. o_O

I have shiny, original paint, and patina. My next one is likely going satin, in primer tones for a certain look.

Back in the day some guys drove unfinished cars in primer or with primer spots. Satin paint is kind of a callback to that with a modern touch being in different colours. They also did whatever they wanted with their cars.

With a moniker like hotrodprimer I have always been a fan of low sheen paint, I know everyone doesn't like it and that's ok with me, the last hot rod I painted with Kirker semi-gloss black paint was well recieved, I liked the easy to clean low maintenance finish.

    To each their own. HRP

to paraphrase Quigley.... "I said I didn't have much use for one. Didn't say I wouldn't drive it."

I guess I will have to stick with my 45 yr. old acrylic enamel with touched-up rock chips. It still shines.

So Winduptoy, when you say "just a wipe down with Howards wax". Do you just apply it with a
clean rag or microfiber towel and leave it on? Or buff it off? I'm curious about using it. Any special
technique? My satin paint has gotten a little chalky in spots, and I'm looking for something that will
give it a bit of sheen. And stay on for awhile, even after washing?
    Thanks for any info.

It's just a multi layer enamel, a bit of flattening agent, sanding, texturing, and rubbing with talc a**** other things. Actually more work than glossy I think, but care way less about touching up a chip using a brush.

Satin rates right up there with Patina when it comes to a "finished" look.

  28. A few years back I had to be a judge at a car show.
The one that got the best paint had a good bit of satin.
Pulling off a quality satin is more work or luck than glossy.

This car was painted with a satin but they put a gloss hardener in it and that made it shiny.
