Hot Rods buick nailhead (401) oil filter housing

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by buickwagon, Nov 22, 2025.

  1. hi guys

does anyone know if the oil filter housing for a 1961--1965 401 is available new anywhere in the US ?
Alternatively does anyone do a remote oil filter kit ?

anyone maybe got a good second hand one and happy to post to Australia ?

I have just discovered mine is cracked and nailhead parts are not very easy to locate in Australia

    thanks all

  2. The 3 main Buick guys on the net are Centerville Auto Repair, TA Performance, and Best Offer Counts (E-Bay mostly). Mid 61 thru 66 will be the same.

Try searching here, too, though, I think this may be the same seller as Best Offer Counts mentioned above: https://buickfarm.com/

Are oil filter adapters out of the question? Lots of choices there…

  8. Most E-Bay sellers will not ship internationally but check with the Martins @ Centerville. I will also look and see if I have one. I believe I gave my spare one to a fellow Hamber a couple of years ago.

My 62 401 uses a spin -on filter and I see on the Centerville site that they list 3 different sizes of spin-on filters for the 401 Nailhead (different lengths) Do some 401 Nailheads use a cannister style filter?
@buickwagon if your housing is cracked why not get it welded by a top quality welder?

  10. ^^^^ The oil filter housing design changed in mid 61, so the early 401s had the earlier longer style. Oil pumps changed in 62 as most of the engines used a center sump pan. Wildcats used a rear sump pan with a different pickup on the "new" style pump. The earlier rear sump pump is getting rare as they are no longer produced. Melling makes the 62-66 pump.
Cracks in the housing usually happen where the relief valve disc sits and is not repairable. External cracks maybe.
