Ok, so the shop I had my car in said that he used a smoke machine to find vacuum leaks in the intake/carb manifold. I used my propane torch to find some leaks on the p*** side of the intake manifold. OK, there is what I would call an 'old school'/antique smoke machine in FB and I was thinking of grabbing it. Question, how would one go about using this on my 5 7 Y block? Is it worth it or would I be better off using a tube from the propane torch? I tried U Tube and so far they are using a modern machine on a modern car. I figure the operation is roughly the same. My DD was setting “lean” codes. I watched the shop hook the machine up to the throttle body. He took one thing off, put one on that fit my TB, and turned the machine on after blocking the throttle wide open. My guess is you’d have to fashion up an adapter to fit your carburetor, and open the throttle up all the way. Didn’t they tell you what/where things were leaking from?
Look on Amazon for the VXScan smoke machine. There is a VX3 and a VX4 $99 and $134 . There are some other similar brands, so you might compare them.
I made one from an old working soldering iron, gl*** jar with a steel lid, some cotton wool and baby oil. Wrap the iron tip with the cotton, secure with some wire, squirt some baby oil on there. It smokes like crazy, if you secure it through the lid of the jar, and install 2 pieces of rubber tubing into the lid, one you puff gently into, the other you connect into your carb, manifold, etc. Do it inside with all the doors and windows closed (no draughts).
