I found a Hilabrand Quick change that my Model A bells fit but the torque tube stud holes do not match the Quick Change banjo. Does anyone know of a fix for this? Would a later model torque tube work?

No it won't. Elongate the holes in the model a torque tube.

Or turn the torque tube 30 degrees and redrill the Quicky case. I'm sure Gearhead has a solution. I've seen Sprint Car cases with 12 holes and half of those with pulled threads.

Not real easy to relocate the radius rod mount on a Model A torque tube like it is on a V8 torque tube.

Whenever I chop up a torquetube I always save the radius rod boss. If you need one I can get you one.

I just finished reading through a bunch of Bruce’s posts and am sorry to learn of his p***ing. He was very knowledgeable and I learned so much from him. Is somebody here continuing his legacy with respect to his side plate adapters?

Maybe to further the QC discussion.....what about an Halibrand 301 with an In & Out - is this for dirt track applications - maybefor movement around the pits - or take the place of a in and out box ?

Having the in/out located in the QC housing has 2 major benefits for sprints and midgets, and possibly a few minor ones that I am not aware of. One is the big weight reduction by not having an in/out box mounted to the firewall (engine plate), that whole ***embly is eliminated.

The other is the torque tube ball is mounted directly to the engine plate. That puts the point of lift about a foot forward of where it would be if the torque tube ball was mounted to the back of an in/out box. When you stand in the throttle the torque from the pinion gear trying to climb the ring gear lifts the front of the torque tube. The farther forward that happens the more weight of the car is transferred to the rear wheels. More weight transfer = more traction. If you could lift from the front axle, in theory the whole weight of the car could go to the rear wheels.

I understand it, I hope I've done a reasonable job of explaining a pretty simple case of physics.

It occurs to me that a lot of guys may not be familiar with sprint cars and midgets. Those cars don't self start. There is nothing on them that is not necessary to going forward fast. That means no starter, battery, flywheel, clutch or transmission. A magneto provides the spark. Before the race the crews push the cars to the pit exit. The driver then shifts from out of gear to in gear and a push truck pushes the car out onto the track. When the car is going fast enough to smooth out and quit shuddering (maybe around 15 or 20 MPH) the driver turns on the fuel and the spark and the car starts. Th driver adds a bit of throttle and pulls away from the push truck. The push truck continues around the track and goes back in the pits to push another car. Several push trucks (often UTV's and ATV's now) can have a couple dozen cars running in just a few minutes.

Oh sad news indeed. That would explain why I never got a reply to my PM to him. Asking what the rear end ratio is on his card. I can’t remember from 7 years ago and 1214 doesn’t mean much to me . The card has always been in the same winters box but faded some . I IMG_6651.jpeg

Here is a quick little tutorial on sprint cars. Basically similar to what I was driving in the 80's. Lots of little improvements, they would lap me in about 3 laps, haha.
