Technical TRW Piston L3170F Identification/Help

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by MoreHPplease, Nov 26, 2025 at 5:38 PM.

  1. The only thing that makes any logical sense is that he might have been helping a friend with an engine build who had a MOPAR.

Perhaps the friend had either decided to not go through with the build or maybe went in a different direction and used more performance related pistons.

I will never know, but at least I know that if these pistons are sold that the buyer can be confident that these are correct for a 5.6L 340 Mopar engine.

Just in case anybody finds this thread here is some more details regarding these TRW L3170F pistons in the screen shots below.

If I had them, I'd put them for sale on ebay for $75 or $100 and see if anyone wants them. Listed as "NORS", New Old Replacement Stock

  3. Thanks Squirrel. (and everyone who also commented and contributed here)

I’m not going to be needing these unless they can be magically shoehorned into a SBC with some much needed love lol.

So I will be certainly putting them up for sale in hopes that a 340 MOPAR fan could use them either for a rebuild or to have on the shelf as spares.

They are in excellent shape for being what appears to be approximately 32 plus years old.

Hopefully they can find themselves a proper new home.

With all the parts it sounds like he had, he might of just bought a "lot" of engine parts at an auction, machine shop sale etc and those happened to be in the "lot"...

  5. It's possible, but I have never known him to acquire car parts in that manner where he would buy random engine parts. I tend to think he was just helping out a friend with a build and it was abandoned or things just went in another direction.

So most likely those pistons were set aside and just forgotten about since he was not into Mopars.

The box having a bar code on it somewhat puts a date on the box. The first time a bar code was used at a cash register was June 26, 1974, in a grocery store ion Troy Ohio. That would date that box after that time.

  7. That, and the fact that the TRW seal on the outside of the box was lacking any modern company website information. The date cast for the year 92 on the inside of the piston skirt also validates the vintage of these pistons.
