Ok I posted this first in the traditional thread and leaned that this really isn't a traditional build (i am new to hamb forgive me). So this is the thread I will post to as I finish this car
Car came with an 8Ba i found a rebuilder (i know its a little early in the build but he is older so I didn't want to lose my chance to have him show me how to rebuild a flatty) engine miraculously was at factory bore and the crank had never been turned. No visable cracks, now we wait for the machine shop to magnaflux it. I also sourced a 4 inch merc crank for my build
Really cool. What are your plans…are you going to wood grain the metal that would normally be wood on a woodie? Extremely safe looking Hot Rod…with the “complete roll cage”. Looking forward to more of your build pics!
In the open panels below the windows i know I know its a "woodie" but if you knew my woodworking skills you wouldn't want to ride in a real woodie of my construction
So though it looks heavy its actually all 18 guage tube. Built by a gentleman here thats a master sheet metal worker. I was going to paint all the steel. And I have a friend that has a wood mill that cut me up a whole black walnut stump for the inserts.
A friend of mine with a wood mill cut this black walnut up for me for the car. Stoked for it to dry and to fit it
This is interesting! Lots of potential here, what's the story here, did the metal guy run out of steam? What part of the country are you in?
He was working in the back of a local sheet metal shop and was building it in spare time. He retired and had to drag it home. He tarped it and came out after winter to it being rusted over and sold it to a friend of mine in frustration. I am in utah.
Why bother with any wood…screw sheet metal to the inside of the tube framework. Then spray the cowl and hood (possible fenders) your favorite color. Then brush paint all the 18 gauge tubing and sheet metal a base color for wood graining. You, or have a wood grain painter do the wood graining. The base color brush strokes will be like the varnish on an actual woody.
Will do! Scored some vintage speed parts for my flathead today. Pretty excited about that. More good coming soon
3 carbs is a little much but I will go progressive on the linkage. I found this super cool original sharp setup for my engine. Fingers crossed everything is ok with it. Though seller remarked he will stand behind it if its not
Well I talked to him on the phone. Very small chambers, valve clearance issues. So no sale for me haha. The hunt continues
Well its been a couple days since an update. Motor is overhauled. I decided to run edelbrock heads. I ran out of money there so I am going to sit the old intake on long enough to get it painted and set in my frame. 4 inch merc crank, isky max1 cam. .030 over. Super excited to finally have a flathead v8 in my car fleet.
I also decided it needs to be a full fender car after seeing a woodie build with no fenders and personally not really liking the look. Hoping to have a running driving frame this spring. Fingers crossed
Welcome to the HAMB! What a great project! Just need some clarification, everything in the body so far is steel? The Walnut is going to look great! Bob
Yes so far. Its kinda a tin woodie but hey i dont know what else to call it haha. I am not wood worker haha I'm glad its all flat panels
Well I got a little fitment work done over the weekend. Just mock up kinda stuff. Trying to decide where to mount the motor and trans and how all my spring and wheel and tire spacing will go. Of course like all good days doing something new i raised more questions than answers. Things like what I am going to do for steering. How this custom body and firewall are going to fit my frame and how far back to set my motor from the radiator. Also if the frame horns are different 28-29 and 30-31. So now to do some reading. I also need to pickup a radiator and a couple other items. BUILDING THE DREAM! Also. Stretching springs is a headache
Regarding engine placement in the frame; the usual process is to get the firewall in position on the ch***is, get the radiator in position, then figure out how to get the engine in between. If more space is needed, then modify the firewall to make space. Note that modifying the firewall will affect interior space, especially in the footwell/pedal area. Nice project.
