Okay you guys. Years ago I had a40 Chev coupe with a 327 and fenderwell headers. I bought mufflers that I'm pretty sure were for a 50s or 60s Chevrolet 6 cylinder pick up truck that the combination gave the exhaust a "tinny" sound. I'm trying to get that sound with a 37 Chev coupe I just put fenderwell headers on. The 37 had what I believe are gl*** packs that "blare" more than I like under acceleration. Have any of you used mufflers that create the "tinny" sound I'm looking for??? THANKS in advance for any help on this info search. REGARDS, WHEELGUY
Yeah tinny, doesn’t have any rumble to it but the sound of the cam comes through sounding tinny. I’d say it’s more of a metallic sound than a combustion noise.
Since you have an idea of the mufflers you liked and and the application, I'd look for replacements for that. The sound is very objective, so that doesn't help much. Were they round, straight thru, oval double p***, or another style?
I would try “turbo” mufflers. They usually have them on the shelf at the auto parts store for pretty cheap. I had Thrush Turbo mufflers behind a hot 302 and it sounded great at wide open throttle but not loud cruising. It fooled a lot of people in to thinking it wasn’t a fast car.

@wheelguy To me the sound "Tinny" you are Describing was like on a SuperPro cars back in late 80's early 90s Where a ****** Super comp Header No Muffler , Big Roller , but the sound. @ Idle engine was Idling 1,500 Rpm's But sound like 500 rpm's ,, you could hear the firing order made a unique sound,, If so the mufflers that Borla Made for Super Comp VR1's came close to sound , Slip on Collector header Mufflers ,
Way back in the day we used to put a flat washer on the bolts between the header collector and the exhaust flange. It made the car sound like it had high compression at the local drive-in. Of course our exhaust cut outs were 2" water pipe with a pipe cap so we were really low buck in Southern Indiana.
On my '40 Chevy back in the 60's, I too had a sbc with fenderwell headers, and used C1 Corvette off-road mufflers, which was a factory option. Available today through many websites. Small compact and a nice sound, but not wimpy.
These days I like a mellow sound............the kind that you don't have to shut your motor off so you can order at the drive thru.
I know EXACTLY the sound you are describing ! My buddy across the road had a 55 Shivel-lay ...4 speed with a 327 and TRUCK MUFFLERS. They were the ROUND mufflers used on dump trucks/farm trucks BITD... Seems like they were about 5-6 inches in diameter. I don't know how well they flowed but.....sounded cool. I would look for something with 2" inlet/outlet to maybe offset any restriction the mufflers may have. 6sally6
