Due to the different shapes of the cab floors, mounting wood is distinct for the generations of cabs. Pic from the Midwest Early Ford catalog:
Wrapping up a mechanical rebuild on my 41. It was running fine, but had an opportunity to get a Flathead from Keith Tardell. After I got the engine I didn’t want to put it into a ratty engine bay, then thought I’d better redo the transmission, which has now expanded to a full mechanical rebuild. it’s 100% new mechanically and will be a very nice light duty hauler. This truck has absolutely no rust due to moisture. Even the original hardware is clean and comes off easily without having to use penetrating oil. I found my p***enger inner fender rusted due to leaking a battery and it had been poorly repaired with brazing. I also replaced it while I had it all apart. All other panels are original to the truck. Last step is the rebuild of the original Columbia - which is underway. Looking forward to getting this back on the road. . LOve these 40's but never owned one. What do most of these guys use for front ends?? Crown Vic...Mustang II...or do most of them use the old straight axle? I like the ones with a low radiator alot more than the tall one sticking up. Just looks right-er(dat-a-word?) Mag wheels just don't look right on'em either! Painted rims..maybe wider painted rims with a small moon or just open. Sweeeeet! 6sally6
I have a stock axle in my '40 truck. Crown Vic's are WAY too wide. Lots of street rod guys use Mustang II on them.
Just finished this one up after a total rebuild because of the bad work underneath. Just got it painted a month ago and the upholstery just got done the other day.
A few pages back and a few years before I bought this project from @Pist-n-Broke I mentioned that I was "interested in these trucks", guess I wasn't just burning band width. Somethings are meant to be. Well, a few posts up was close to done, this is how it turned out. Body and paint by yours truly and pinstriping by Mitch Kim. Cl***ic Instruments and Vintage Air surrounded by black and white pearl upholstery Desoto hemi under the louvered hood
Excellent idea, it's a great thread. I just picked this one up today, it belonged to a good buddy who had it for 35+ years and decided to kick loose of it. I'd always wanted this truck, so I was happy to load it up. I'm sure he will call in a couple of years and want it back and that will be just fine, I'm just the caretaker for now. www.ironandsteele.com
I've seen that truck somewhere. And I just found a pic on my phone of it at the uptown cruise a few years ago. Same?
Truth be told, I think you are correct. I'd trade my '34 in a heartbeat fer a '40. The most useful pretty Pickup ever to roll outta Detroit. IMHO
The boys fired the altered up that day for us, nice noise! I didn't have my 41 PU done at that point. I spent a while on the truck, taking pictures and studying it. Nice acquisition man. Good yakking at ya out at troutdale this year at Darrel and Eds. Look forward to it again someday.
C***' he had it painted like the shop truck from his dad's old gas station i just love these 16 inch flipper caps, i could build a car around this set, i think i'm going to steal them. blocked cut out hints at something else. after hours phone number, an ode to Wilson Pickett, some wag scrawled lonely above it in chalk.
Are they turn signals as well or just running lights? @Marty Strode these would be kinda cool on your truck.
