Friend did his 70’s Grand Prix with Kirby vacuum cleaner. The finish was rough. Better results with a brush.

The latest cheap paint setup I see lately on the internet is electric spray guns. Might be worth a try.

  4. Did my '40 coupe bright yellow in 1958, synthetic enamel. Everything in the garage was covered in yellow overspray including the vacuum. Mom was not impressed.

hey i did a '58 beetle like that in high school. 1969 i was working at the local sherwin williams store and they got a new rental spray gun & tank compressor. bought some orange industrial enamel and went to town. tires, weatherstripping, running boards. damn that was a sharp looking ride.

no one would believe my father let me do that in the garage. i honestly think he was too embar***ed to be pizzed off.

    farkin' hippies, eh?

Back in the 90s I paint several cars with a Wagner pro because I didn't have access to a booth my brothers and I chipped in on it. We fitted a pro gravity gun on it the thing worked great but it's a whole different animal as it uses warm dry air.

I used to have the complete set of spray equipment for a Kirby vacuum in the original cardboard display box that hung on the wall in my grandad's ba*****t shop. All the accessories were made of maroon Bakelite. Sold it at a garage sale when I bought a new house.

A guy who used to belong to my Studebaker chapter (he's p***ed away now) painted his Studebaker with a vacuum spray rig. It only blew about 20 psi, so the finish was kind of satiny instead of shiny. Of course, that might be because he didn't spray any clear on top of the baby blue.

    Anyway - that stuff existed...

any time (my other hobby) i have ever mentioned "model railroading or trains" stories come flying out of the woodwork. 'my friend, when i was seven, one christmas - et cetera'.

apparently vacuum spray painting is the new "model trains."

    carry on.

Shot some primer on my first car that way. Rescued from a back yard with surface rust on the hood and top from tree dropping sap on it. 46 Chev 2dr sedan. Dad and I put new rings in it, removed some rod shims to tighten them, I sanded most of the rust off and grabbed Mom's vacuum. Got my license and drove it year or so, but the primer never fell off so guess it works.

The Kirby had an attachment for Ball jars. I remember my Mom using my “special” 2 quart ball jar when she painted the barn. The jar was only special to me because my grandparents always brought me my own jar of wild blueberries they canned when they would go to Minnesota every summer.

I was one step above a va***n cleaner - I used the spray gun that came with my Dad's Shopsmith to paint my frame Rustoleum gloss black.

But mom had a Kirby, and that thing just looked like a serious machine.

I remember my dad painting some chairs from an old dining room set with splatter paint. He used mom's Electrolux wich had about a dozen attachments including the paint sprayer. It had so many attachments that it had a saddle that clipped on the top of the cleaner to hold them. The picture is off the web. Electrolux 01.jpg

My folks had an Electrolux vacuum in the early 60's, don't recall it being that cool looking though.

There were two tool rental places near where I lived back in the mid sixties. Both rented Spray guns and compressors. I don't remember what they charged, but it wasn't that much. One of the places is still there and in business. We used our vacuum cleaners to pick up dirt.

This reminds me of a Pink Panther cartoon, where a painter was using blue paint, and the Pink Panther kept painting over it in pink. At one point he slipped a sprinkler into the room and used that to cover the entire room.

Sprayed primer a panel at a time as I fibergl***ed in all the rust holes and trim holes in my 49 Chevy high school ride (about 1959). Dark grey lacquer primer and lots of thinner for it to spray with the Electrolux.

Yep, in '57-'58 my pal used one to paint his Jimmy powered '41 Chev. He didn't even wash (or vacuum)it first.

My stepfather used his Kirby to repaint my mom’s 52 Buick ‘55Chevy coral and grey colors in the driveway. It turned out with a satin finish but it looked pretty cool in 1958.
The attachments are long gone but the Kirby still works and resides in my garage.
