    Hello,

We have been inundated with the current crop of tall sprinter vans as a means of camping. But, those skinny tires make those vans feel and look “tippy.” Even when they take up the whole single lane coming toward you on a tight two way street with cars parked on both sides. Yikes. They move over, ride the center line and cause us to stop until they drive past us.

The difference between those sprinter vans and one from the good old days is style and design. A tall box just does not “have it” for daily driving or long distance driving. On windy days, it must be a nightmare to keep in centered in the normal traffic lanc. But a customized panel truck from the 50s has style and room. Sleeping quarters on a full size mattress is a snap. Custom cabinets, with modifications as to how a person wants to use the van.

Having built a few interiors of old surf vans, it all depends on what you want. No doubt, the job is done for you if you get a fixed up sprinter van from the dealer. Just gas, water and off you go…

It just depends on what or how you want your panel van to be used and how much you want to fill up the interior space. A few motorcycles will not fit in a sprinter van with a full interior. A custom GMC panel van can be arranged to have the rear doors open for two motorcycles to roll right in place. So, that may be how you see your custom panel van. More doors and a custom interior designed for what you want and how you use the interior.

Two bikes, inside surf racks and plenty of space for seating and sleeping.

Some may just want a sink, refrigerator and one/two custom swivel bucket seats to sit back and read the HAMB while parked on a cliff overlooking the deep blue ocean…YRMV
