These were really fun to see in car shows because they were show cars, almost completely divorced from what we drove. But it was a fun time and there was some amazing talent on display.

Doug Cook, street driven, record setting drag race, SBC powered 1937 Chevy Coupe.

    Hello,

One of our favorite street driven cars in the Gas Coupe and Sedan Cl***es, before they all turned into pure drag racing cars. As the years rolled on in this cl***, the builds became not capable of driving 10 miles to a local drive-in restaurant parking lot and continuing on into the late night. So, the term street legal was a moot point.

    Thanks, Mike Cook...

But, while the cl*** stayed with their hot rod roots, the term street legal was in place. Uncap the exhaust outlets, side pipes, and go racing in the cl*** designated from small flathead motors all the way to powerful SBC versions of the popular motors. Cl***es were provided from small v8 motors to large motors. Mufflers and tail pipes were part of the street legal ruling.

Look at the wide variety of street legal hot rods waiting to race in their respective cl***es, including a supercharged Hemi motor in a yellow/black Ford Truck being used for daily house painting jobs during the week and showing up to race on the weekends. Those certainly were the days…

During my teenage wandering times between filming at the dragstrip, and duties during the 58 impala drag race elimination races, I went all over the compound, including the pits. Up close and personal was always fun and a learning experience. Bucket seats, LaSalle transmission, plenty of room for cruising around on the So Cal streets in those early days… YRMV

Tahitian Red paint on the 37 Chevy coupe, fit right in with the So Cal custom car painting schemes at the time period. The 37 Chevy coupe was nicely done and had set plenty of records while usually winning the cl*** at Lion’s Dragstrip weekly.
upload_2025-12-10_3-12-19.png Cap up the pipes and drive home was the key in those days. Fully street legal, so by the time the cl*** eliminations were finished, it was dark and working headlights/taillights were necessary for the drive home.
