$450 48 chevy + $400 S-10 + $1100 wheels and tires + recycled engine&trans + misc stuff ...........should be running and driving for $3000 or so in real money.

Although I dont believe I will be under the $5000 mark i should be purty close and have a real nice lookin ride (i think, u all can think what you want). Hey maybe youll see me in rod n custom
This all reminds me of the bit Adam Corrolla does on his morning radio show "What Can't Adam Complain (i.e. *****) about". I've heard him ***** about big ****s, free beer, big screen TV's, nice cars, internet ****- you name it! Just like this post- "WRITE IT- AND THEY WILL *****" Kinda glad I'm no longer making that my sole path in life- not that plenty won't find a reason to ***** about my next venture- mark my words. Mainly for the sole reason they just can't do it themselves. The bottom line is- IF I CAN'T DO IT (because of any number of reasons like lack of skills, friends, hookups or just getting off your ***) I CAN AT LEAST ***** ABOUT IT ON MY COMPUTER. Right? Go ahead and POUR ON the bad REPUTATION POINTS- that's the LEAST you can do!
I checked this thread out and was amazed at all the *****in'. There are those who would say this magazine article is misleading. Well I suppose to a virgin or real short timer or someone with no personality or freinds and who wants to add their labor, their layarounds and raidables in,I suppose it would be. On the other hand someone who has been in the game for a while and has a few freinds and a little personality,(personality goes a long way when scroungin' for cheap or free ****)and some useable or repairable **** or raidable **** layin' around. These people know what the real deal is and therefore don't find it misleading. Case in point.I just got my Volvo goin' late last summer.(Wanted to get to the HAMB Drags BAD but couldn't quite make it happen even with 13th hour help),and granted it ain't pretty, but it is a functional mid 7 sec 1/8 mi.car,(soon to be faster with the same **** and a little more work). So after a *****in' inspired spur of the moment, liberal pencil whippin',I can unequivocably state that to date I have no more than $2476 cash in it. Now admittedley to some this $amount would be misleading because of the laying arounds trades and donations(not to mention time and effort)and raided components. But hey,CASH is CASH and when you are talking costs Ie. CASH OUTLAY,that other **** don't count. So quitcher *****in' and go make some freinds and some trades and do a little scroungin' and a little raidin' and have yourself a merry little low buck ride. The End
i got less then 5000 in mine, but it looks like a pile of ****. and it took me lots of time to collect all my freebee stuff. and find cheap parts.
I'm not gonna' read every post on here to see if this has been said so here goes.. I know Jim Crewz, I have known him for a couple of years and he employs one of my best freinds. This is a list of FACTS for your consideration. 1. He started this car 7 years ago. 2. He was working as a plastic mold maker when he began looking for parts. 3. He only began running a full-time shop a few years ago. 4. He has alot of freinds who also are into hot rods. 5. He worked very hard to keep the cost down on this project. I'm not trying to convince anyone that he did or didn't build this car for what the mag says. I just want to clear up alot of speculation.
Both of these cars came in around 7K. Used motors in both of them and frame from Krylon special came from down the street as a roller from friend that had burned out on the project. Selling the huge MT tires and weld wheels on the roller paid for the motor and trans . The 30 chevy blue car body came from ebay, the motor cost $500 and many friends helped us put it together. A local shop welded up the frame and made the little truck bed and we have driven both cars tons over the last couple years. I like a few others believe it can be done for a few bucks, but it takes involvement and a knowledge of what good junk really is. We are building another one now for a friend ( who has little car skills) and the budjet is 10K. Almost done and have tracked every dollar so far and the budjet is going to be close.
Jim, That Adam Corrolla stuff is funny s**t!! You bring up a good point about people not being able to do it so at least the can ***** about it on the computer. Seems to be human nature I guess. I can't speak for others on here, but I can say that I can build a car for under $5,000.00 (current project will be under that number AND be flathead powered) and I still have a small issue with this article. I can't quite put my finger on it as to why though. LOL Maybe I should re-read the article and take a second look at it. Maybe I'd find I'm not as upset about it as I thought I was. Oh, by the way...I told my Dad (you spoke with him a few months ago now on the phone) that you were longer with the mag, he was disapointed and hopes the magazine continues in a positive direction. Matt
It is possible to build a car like that for $5,000. I think the point of the article was that if you use your imagination and networking, it can be done. I'm building a T bucket. I had to buy the ch***is from Total Performance, but I know I can get the things I need to finish it by being resourceful. I'm going to do my own interior and the yearly auto show and swap meet is coming up. I know I'll spot some things I can use. Heck, I found out a week ago that a guy who runs the mechanic shop across the street from my job is a hot rodder. He hasn't built one in years due to running his business and raising a family. We got to talking while I was having a flat fixed and he liked the fact that I was building a rod and has offered to go through the motor I'm going to use. No money involved. All I have to do is help him. Now that's a deal! Freebies and cheap parts are out there all you have to do is look around and ask. The worst you can do is get a "no".
I think the real intent of the article is to sell an advertizers products. Namely T bodies and frames.
I have heard folks on this thread talk about how they have or will have less then $5000 into their cars.. that great but do they have shiny paint, complete interiors and the other things that set the R&C car apart of most of the rides folks are talking about. (Not saying it can not be done, just the one in R&C can not be done by a first timer or the average joe hotrod builder.)
