Wanting to replace the generator on a '39 Ford PU(stock flat head v8) with a powergen alt, but it has no provision for the fan mounting. Is there an adapter available or is this even possible? Not interested in an electric fan.

    Thanks

I don’t think a powergen has the correct bearings for the thrust of a fan.

I've heard the same about mounting a fan on the Powergen. Can't you use a stock generator and mount the fan on that, or do you need more amperage for aftermarket stuff?

Already have a generator/fan setup. Wanting to switch to alt.

Hmm, didn't think about fan thrust.

Was wondering if anyone had successfully done this...

Fury, he doesn’t mean the small fan behind the pulley. He’s talking about the big fan to pull air through the radiator.

A quick call to Powermaster would be in order. They should be able to either say yes or no.

I have one on the flattie in my 32. I drove it for four years or so, until I got a wild hair for a roadster and switched out the body. Now it’s sitting, waiting as life p***es by.
I checked with PowerGen, both the factory and the guy that did their testing.
Neither said don’t, just keep an eye on it. (!?!?)
But they don’t recommend it, and they tell you with the paperwork in the box.
I used a 32 fan and the Speedway adapter. I babied the thing, (60 mph), no high rpm’s, so can’t give a total report. Engine runs cool with it pulling through a boiled out and pressurized 32 radiator.
    Fingers crossed!

Just thinking outside the circle here .....
Could someone with design and machining capabilities come up with an intermediate adapter that incorporates an appropriately sized bearing that goes between the PowerGen, the pulley and the fan.
Not sure how it would all fit together and whether there's room available ...... it's just my first thought on how to overcome the bearing overloading issue.

It might sit too low for your application but my 8BA came with a fan that mounts on it's own bracket below the generator.

Not the best side shot but it shows where it sits. And yuppers the Exhaust manifold is a mess because they had it in a Jeep wagon.

Yeah, PowerGen doesn't recommend putting a fan on their alternators, but guys do it. If you want to use a fan on your PowerGen, I'll sell you the pulley you need for half price. Speedway gets $70.

I was going to run it on my PowerGen, but wound up going a different direction--specifically, a remote fan like shown above in Mr48chev's post.

Thanks for all the feedback. This is for a customer's truck, so I will give him the pro's and con's and let him decide.
Personally, I'd just keep the gennie since it's working
