    Rookie1948

    Good afternoon,

I’m new to the forum and ready for my first post.

About the ***le. Last year I was at the local Harley dealership picking up parts for a sidecar I was rebuilding when I saw a helmet sticker that read, “KEEP ADDING WHEELS UNTIL YOU STOP FALLING DOWN”. I bought a wrecked sidecar to rebuild as part of therapy to get me moving after a knee replacement. The sidecar was finished and I began looking for my next motorcycle project.

At some point I remembered the helmet sticker and thought why not add a fourth wheel to my next project. So I went to lunch with a friend and came home after a delicious meal with a 1948 Ford Deluxe coupe.

The first time I got the car on a lift and got a surprise that gave me eye strain and a headache. The main section of the X frame was gone! The previous owner told me he bought it that way and that the guy he bought from eliminated it to accommodate long tube headers and an automatic transmission. The frame was weak and dangerous.

While contemplating all the needed modifications that had to be made to strengthen that frame a second frame became the best option. I miraculously found a matching 1948 frame that someone had already removed the x frame, properly reinforced it, adding a Four 9” with a 4 link and coil overs. The front end was Mustang ll steering and Corvette suspension, brakes etc. and the frame was all boxed. Most of the work done reasonably well with the exception of the connection from the Mustang ll rack to the Corvette outer tie rod ends. They accomplished this (temporarily I hope) by welding a metric bolt to the Mustang ll inner tie rod that matched the Corvette outer tie rod ends thread. How should I go about properly making the two connect and work properly. Is there a conversion kit or a standard way of maching a part. Drill and retap outer tie rod ends to match inner tie rod thread? Maybe rethread Mustang ll inner tie rods?

Now forum related questions. I wanted to post this but could figure out what my car was….. hot rod ….. custom……traditional?
    It’s a 1948 Ford Deluxe Coupe, currently with a Chevy 350.

Thank you all for your patience while I figure out the message board and look forward to learning a lot from all the experienced builders.

Welcome to the HAMB from Illinois.

Regarding tie rod ends that mate the Mustang steering rack with Corvette steering arms or outside taper on Corvette. I'm not too much help.

I suggest you start a new thread here, describing what you wish to accomplish:
    https://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/forums/off-topic-hot-rods-customs.98/

Some of the questions that need to be answered are:
Internal taper angle on Corvette steering arm or outside taper of Vette tie rod end (based on Corvette generation, such as C4)?
Enternal thread specification for your Mustang rack tie rod ends?

There will no doubt be more questions to your situation, but working on these answers will get you started.
