Was looking at an ad for a 54 Imperial and wondered about the location of the steering “box”. Here, the steering shaft is visible between the frame and engine. Is it inside the front crossmember? Must be a real bear to change. Or maybe that center plate unbolts? Even that looks like it would be quite an undertaking as the lower control arms attach there, too. Looked online for some picture of the ch***is.
Just guessing but wonder if the "steering shaft" you're seeing is actually a drag link to the L shaped pivot similar to a early 50's Chevy?
If I understand the L shaped pivot reference correctly, that could be, but where's the “box” that pushes/pulls the drag link?
Studebakers had a similar setup as the Chevys, steering box on the frame near the firewall with a pitman arm extended to meet the L shaped (bell crank) center link
It's funny, for years any of them for sale were often without the engine. Couldn't find a quick pick.
@vtx1800 you're suggesting the box is up near the firewall on the frame? Anyone got a similar illustration specific to the 54 Imperial they could post ? Just curious…
Here's a 54 resto. Doesn't have a great shot for you though. https://www.web.imperialclub.info/Yr/1954/Henderson/index.htm
