Semi- original owner... (Father-in-law bought new) 91 S-10 shortbed...4L-60 ******..250,000 miles on virgin engine !
In the summer time the speedometer works great. In the cold weather seasons it 'sometimes' works and other times NOT !
It has a VSS and NOT a cable. The cruise still engages even when the speedo is registering 0.
(a so-called test for a bad VSS) Usually when I first drive it on cold mornings it reads 0....after about 20 minutes it starts bouncing a little and then starts working!
It 'seems' like a bad VSS but.... I hate to start swapping parts like a dealership mechanic:rolleyes: but it is sorta irritating .
You fellas know more about this problem/fix than I do ?
    If so please share...
    Thx

MAN !!!...........I don't think I'm able to do all that !!
I have a few light bulbs burned out in my instrument panel now.
NO clue how to get to them without destroying the sun-hardened 33 YEAR OLD mostly plastic dash...
Some of the stuff on this thang GM installed and then built a truck AROUND IT !!
(Like the heater core for instance Thank Goodness we have mild winters here)
I hate to sound whineeee ****........ Shirley there is a simpler way to test and replace this problem (or not)

IMG_2923.png Short of trying a multimeter to test the frequency and resistance at the sensor. I’d wiggle around what harness you can access. They have issues with the connectors. I’d check and clean whatever you might be able to get to.

Myself would probably just throw in a sensor if it doesn’t work. It will be in that wiring, module or cluster. If you don’t want to get into that I’d just leave it. Not worth breaking things if you can deal without the Speedo.

Intermittent speedometer function but still has a working cruise control tells me the cluster is about to take a permanent vacation. If the cruise doesn't work when the speedo doesn't work, I would replace the speed sensor on the trans.
The speedometer in my 96 Dodge died of old age with 67,000 miles on it! The odometer would quit working occasionally, but then one day the speedometer joined it. I installed a set of aftermarket gauges in place of the instrument cluster. I'm still using the same sender on the trans.

Send the speedo out for repair. If the cruise works then so does everything else. Except for the speedo.
