Getting ready to take the body off a 60 Vette. No doors, interior, hood, windshield, top, bumpers or rear deck, trim or lights. Plan on having 4 guys lift the body so I can roll the frame from under it. No steering column engine or radiator. All wiring is removed. Think I can lift if right next to the frame mounts I've got to lift it about 12" from what I can tell. Any idea what a bare body weighs? SBC or BBC are not going back in. Richard >>> Movin/on
I lifted one end of the body of my 62 up an inch when it was empty like that, it's not very heavy. 4 guys should be fine. About 400 lbs max according to the guys on the corvette forum old internet photo for your entertainment. The 6 guys shown are not working hard.
Thanks: that's what I thought. Asked the same question on the Corvette Forum over a year ago and never got an answer. Richard
I did a 67 roadster over forty years ago and what I did was put a 2” square steel tube across the body between the body and frame and a similar tube for the front but I had to make a couple straps of steel then went from the first and second body mounts so I had something for the tubing to lift. I put a couple of welds on the tubing to the straps. Doing it this way especially when putting the body back on not damaging the fresh paint or fibergl***. You don’t handle the car you handle the cross bars… good luck
I have lifted quite a few early Corvette bodies from the ch***is. 4 guys can lift it, but 6 are much safer. Remember that the steering column must either be removed first or removed with the body. It is the same when reinstalling the body.
I did a 60 awhile back and the only thing I was told was to leave the doors on or to have a triangle brace at the door opening going from the door latch to where the door hinges are. This is do due to a chance of body flex when lifting the body from the frame. If you notice that it is only the fibergl*** floor holding the body together and if you lift the rear or the front by itself you will notice some body flex. Body flex equals stress cracks. I lifted the body were there was the greatest fibergl*** m***, lateral with the firewall and just behind the door opening on both sides Remove steering column and any other attachments, obtain a case of beer and 4 to 6 guys and lift. Two things to plan for: (1) have a place set the body before you lift and (2) hold off on the beer until the lift, move, and set has been completed. Good luck and remember a body off the frame is like having another car in your shop.
That's me with my Dad, brothers and a friend lifting my body off in 1974. Most of us were using one hand. I still have the car.
