Jan 17 is Big Daddy Don Garliist 97 birthday!! God Bless him, he's living proof Speed doesn't Kill!!!

 

Wow. He had a great racing career. I saw him race many times.

If you read this, we pitted by you at the Nostalgia Nationals, Fremont, May 1, 1988.
You were doing a smoke show with the replica of Swamp Rat I, black tracked the entire strip!
It was Jim Davis' Birthday and we all ate cake. Good Times.
The track closed November of that year.

The first drag race I ever went to was Island Drag Way when Don broke 200 miles a hour, got to shake his hand though I had no idea who he was or what a dragster was, I was there because a guy my father worked with was racing a souped up corvette, and he went to see him! Was blown away with the nitro noise and he burned rubber the whole length of the strip. Needless to say I was hooked, never seen anything like it!!

 

They are having a birthday celebration for Don on the 17th at Lead Foot City near Brooksville, FL and Don will be in attendance. Just be aware you need to be a member of Lead Foot City, which have free memberships on-line, to be able to attend. Membership Application – Lead Foot City

 

Not really sure, but the last time I saw him, he wouldn't talk, just sat there for pictures, Didn't act like his normal self.

 

From what I have read, Don has had ongoing hearing issues along with constant pain. But I also read that he's recently had surgery and is pain free and a good bit of his hearing has returned.
