Busy times for the holidays, but I do have a few updates from the Balboa Boiler Room.

I had always thought the fuel filler had felt incomplete. In my research, I thought back to @Hitchhiker's channeled roadster and concluded that mine needed a gasket. So now we have one. It's from a 1947-'54 Chevy/GMC truck, shaved to meet the contour. After talking to David, I realized that the cap is indeed vented. It's from one of my all-time favorite motorcycles, pulled from an old coffee can where it had been sitting since 2015.

Next, I turned my focus to the exhaust. I plan to have these over-axle pieces professionally done one of these days, but that's not in the budget at this point. IMG_3992.jpg
The pipes will be painted black and end with a pair of chrome tips, for style.

Right about this length. Sound good?

That splotch has been there for a while if ya take a close look at the photos.

That gas cap looks 100x better with the gasket great call! I’ve been digging through my cap stash making a plan for my A and this adds some fuel to that process!

your exhaust isn’t really to many bends. Once you get the car on the road and it’s been cooked into solid form for a while and you decide you want solid pipe just order a cheap kit of bends and an afternoon welding at the bike shop ( realizing that could be several places you frequent but any of them would work) and you’ll be done!

Another option is to take the bent section and bring it to your local hot rod exhaust shop and just have them bend the complex section for you. It’s often a lot cheaper than you’d expect it to be.

    Lovin it man your close!

    - clarification, local hot rod exhaust shop is not meaning a hot rod shop that does exhaust. I find that no matter where I go there is a standard bent on the spot, built or repaired on the car on a lift daily driver exhaust shop who has a boss who loves old cars and is “the guy” for your normal standard exhaust put on an old car. None of this $1500 quote and they refuse to do anything short of polished stainless tig welded sculptures.

we are talking you bring $120 and your own mufflers and go get a sandwich and come back in an hour shop.

Joey used flex tube on version 1 with that nice little bracket as a rear support. On my banger, I run dual Porter's with flex behind the mufflers to a similar bracket inspired by Joey. I'm pretty sure he wants to run the flex. Sorry Joey if I'm presuming.

His second sentence in the post says he’s going to have them done professionally in the future. That’s why I made the post.

edit: I’m in no way opposed the flex pipe exhaust on a car like this btw.

Nice work on the car, Joey. I am also liking the coppertone Stingray!!

  12. Sorry, I don't understand. Does the pipe attach to the bike and the bike gets towed to support the pipe?

It a California courtesy law thing. You must hire a person with issues to ride the bike and point the exhaust away from all who find fossil fuel emissions offensive.

Hahah just getting it dialed in...

Thanks, Tim! Lots of good ideas there. The system will be pretty much completely hidden, but I do think it'd be cl***y to have real pipes one day. We'll see.

    Rothko-inspired!

Love the setup, Warren! Looks perfect.

That's looking so good! I can't wait for all of us to have our roadsters on the road together. Nice V8-60!

Hahah thanks guys. It's a 1966 Sting-Ray that I got for Christmas quite a few years ago. Highlights include original paint, a gold Metalflake seat, and a Gripper Slik. Non-coincidentally, it's the same year as my old Triumph chopper and HD Shovelhead.

Nothing really new to report on the car this week. But all this talk of exhaust is making me think back to the day I got the setup on Version 1.5 dialed in. IMG_3989.jpg
We've come a long way, but these were good days.

A few other odds and ends, while I'm here. 4M5A0027.jpg
    First, a 'banger at sundown.
    IMG_4041.jpg
Next, a perfectly composed drag racing scene.

Finally, the energy I hope my friends and I will be bringing in the new year.

Ok it’s Friday but there aren’t any new jalopy journal posts over the holidays. So, I guess I’ll just bump this to the top so I know it’s Friday lol

Tim's note popped up right as I was about to post. I just wanted to hop on here to say Merry Christmas everyone. I hope you were able to spend the day with those closest to you. I spent mine with my family, and I'm very much enjoying my time back in Michigan. I plan to do a end of year recap at some point, but, in the meantime, here's a shot from Randy Dodson that I haven't yet shared.

Just because I'm away from San Francisco doesn't mean that I'm not thinking about what's next on the car. I ordered the rest of the pieces of my exhaust system, and I'm scheming about what else I need to hit the ground running in 2026. I also have new published work, soon-to-be-published pieces, and much more, all of which I will be sharing on here in the not-so-distant future.

Man that needs to either be a poster or the photo on the inside back cover of a book

  27. Tim, I was just showing that photo to my son, home for the holidays, and explaining to him, "That's us! The photo distills the activity we experience. It is our portrait, a captured moment of who we are." I saw what you saw.

Thanks, everyone! Loving the vintage two-wheel content. I think my Schwinn road bike will be getting a tune up in the new year. You'll see it in the background of some of the roadster shots.

As I mentioned earlier, I'm back in Michigan for the holidays. IMG_4321.jpg
Today, we were able to check out Meadow Brook Hall, which was commissioned by Matilda Dodge Wilson, heiress to the Dodge fortune in the late 1920s. IMG_4333.jpg
And yes, I did find the one early Ford on the property.
    IMG_4342.jpg
Next, we swung by the Affleck House, designed by Frank Lloyd Wright.
    IMG_4349.jpg
I dream of driving my roadster here one day.
