Projects Finding an old Kustom

  1. Very tastefully done originally considering a lot was done in the 80s

Is this where the saying " getting down and dirty " came from?!

Well as it goes for most people the holidays have slowed me down a bit. Currently I’m knee deep in all of the things that take time and nobody ever gets to see. IMG_6881.jpeg I got the new steering upgrade installed from Shoebox Central. It uses a modern idler arm and the center link gives better clearance for the small block ford.
    IMG_6880.jpeg
The entire brake system is new and installed. I still need to box the front crossmember in from the “old school” engine install in the late 70s.

The new fuel tank is in and most of the underside of the car has been cleaned and painted. I will replace the old exhaust too when the motor is back in.

Also started on the wiring. Man it was a nightmare as I expected. I’m going to install a new harness from speedway.

Great find, and history! Custom Jim sure did a nice job on the chop.

My good friend Scott Pavey gave me this killer magazine from Finland with an article written by Pat Ganahl on his coverage from the 1982 Leadsled Spectacular in Des Moines. That is my Mercury in the picture. Too bad I can’t read the article. This was right after the Merc was chopped and repainted from its purple version.

Another cool shot of the car before it was chopped, it had a louvered hood with tons of pinstripes. Gene won best louvers.

Man, that wiring looks about the same as the wiring did in my Merc.

Cool find on the Finnish magazine! With all the handy gadgets on the internet now with translators and whatnot, maybe you can copy the text and have Google translate it.

This is a picture of me with the Merc the day I brought it home. I was fortunate enough to get its old car show signs, license plates it had throughout the years and a couple photo albums. It even still has the car club plaque on the bumper. I will continue to preserve it as the new care taker.
    IMG_5874.jpeg
I also got a handful of trophies from the 70s and 80s.

I wonder what happened to a lot of the customs that I used to see at all the shows in the 80’s. Nice find!

CCR is up in the air for us at the moment. as our boy is getting his Make-A-Wish request in that month, so we might be at Disney World/Universal at that time. Even if its not the same week, I can't really take that much time away from the business.
