Here's a link to an article that I worked with the Hagerty author about my 3 Utes. Mostly accurate, a couple things mixed up, but overall a pretty accurate story of me and my cars. https://www.hagerty.com/media/car-p...liss-with-cl***ic-aussie-utes/#comment-241266
Just wondering if the Tony who had the Chevy Ute at Bonneville was Tony Huntimer (RIP) typo41 from here on the HAMB? IIRC his Ute had Jag front suspension.
Nice collection of utes, Terry. Good article and yes, Tony was a great guy to have helping you. Miss him bunches. Australia had some really cool cars that we never had in America. Visited there in '88 and saw a 1939 Chevy Sloper that has to be my favorite Chevrolet of all time. Thanks for the article
Yes, Tony Huntimer is the one, yes typo41 was his HAMB username. Tony was the one who published the Bonneville photo calendars, as well as a racer himself. He did have Jag front suspension in his 49 or 50 (I can't remember) Chevy Ute. Pretty sure his wife still has it, although lost touch over time. When I got the 37 Chevy, Tony brought over a 52 Ford Ute in the same container with that 41 Willys mentioned in the article. I am also planning Jaguar IFS, and possibly IRS, for my 52 Chevy Ute when I hot rod it with the Olds 394. I found a cheap RHD Jaguar XJ6 that I parted out and saved the front and rear suspension. Already familiar with the Jag setups as my 52 GMC pickup has Jag front and rear suspension. Only decision on the Ute is going with Jaguar IRS or go with 59-64 Olds, or possibly 9-inch, rearend options.
Bravo Terry! We miss you out here and it's great to see you still on the build train . Merry Christmas to you and Denise. And of course Happiest of New Years!
When I first started going to a cars and coffee Saturday meet up in Mentone, CA Tony was one of the first to welcome me. All around a good guy. I still have one of his World's Fastest Calendars hanging on my shop door. Not sure if Chic still has the Ute. She moved to Texas and I'm no longer in touch with her.
I think Ford usually did better on styling than GM in the '30s, but Holden got the roofline right on that '37 Chevy. What happened to the '41 Willys ute?
I don't know on the Willys, besides it was planned to be hot rodded; last known it was in CA, but I left CA in 2009. Here's a picture of the 41 as it was unloaded out of the container that my 37 Chevy was shipped in. Note the wheels rusted along the bottom. The whole wood framing for the bed was gone and the bedsides flopped around. Also couple showing Tony's 52 Ford and my 37 Chevy as unloaded from the container in Long Beach near the port at a shipper's warehouse.
