Happy new year guys. Checking on my SJ 327 and can see cracked rubber protruding from the balancer so it’s time to replace it. It has the press on style and I think I’d rather drill and tap for added security rather than replace with another pres on type. This car is a cruiser so I’m not concerned with SFI rating etc. does it matter which diameter balancer I replace with ***uming all timing pointers and marks are on point (pun intended )? Stock is 6”ish any advantage to a larger diameter? Anecdotal experience and advice is welcome. Thanks

Forgot to add that I am in a position to use a piston stop to find true TDC and make correct timing marks etc.

If you don't plan high RPM use, a stock replacement is the way to go.

It didn't fall off in the past 60 years, why do you think it'll fall off now? :) (yes, I drilled the crank in my 327 for a bolt, if you're wondering.)

I have mixed and matched 283,327, and early 350 parts over the years, all 3 engines and balancers,no problem. Someone told me 305 stuff was different, but i never tried, only earlier stuff, usually pre 77, with and without drilled cranks, never had an issue with either configuration

If your timing tab is a bolt on you can easily change diameter if its welded to the timing cover unless you want to cut it off your stuck with that size. There are some later dampers that have the timing mark at 12 o'clock So you'll need to order one from the 60's or early 70's. Power bond makes a nice replacement damper. I agree drilling and tapping is good insurance. Also checking tdc is the right thing to do.

Post a picture. Surface defects dont affect performance the working rubber section is about 1/8" down from the end faces.

I like the 365-375 horsepower version with the 8 inch diameter X 2 inch thick... I'm not sure you could buy those new.....:(

Like this, factory replacement for the original finned balancer on the high hp 327's and 302's, had no fins, it was thought those fins did very little.
This was ordered through local Chevy dealership many years ago, see them at swap meets as NOS, guess that means not available anymore.
