I have a Mallory Model ZC Type 301A. It has instructions for running in the points dated 1952, a 2 piece cap with the number 24004 on the bottom piece and 24005 on the top part. A rubber piece goes between the bakelite parts with the number 24902 on it. It appears to be NOS. What does it fit?
https://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/threads/mallory-distributor-numbers-and-suffixes.1112797/ good stuff on the hamb, if you search
The JC Whitney catalog lists the 301A as 54 Merc, different number for Ford. This one doesn't have a vacuum advance on it and doesn't look like there is a place to put one.
The ZC Mallory’s have a vacuum brake, as was used on flathead Fords. With low vacuum a leather pad rubbed on the point plate to retard the advance. It will not be a regular appearing vacuum canister. Look for a small welch plug in the distributor body, or later distributors used a sheet metal cover held in place by two screws, (10-32’s?) behind that cover is a spring , piston and the leather pad. A tube may be on that cover for the vacuum line or sometimes Mallory drilled and tapped the casting with 1/8” NPT for a fitting.
OK this has the vacuum brake, it has the cover with 2 screws and a spring behind it. And there is a NPT plug in there for the vacuum line. Thanks everyone, now to find someone who needs it.
I tried to find a replacement 2 piece cap and the rubber seal that fits between the pieces for several years for the Mallory dizzy on my flathead. No one made replacements as of about 2010- 2014. Maybe someone does now?
Watch eBay for a while. Every once in a while, some undesirable model will come up for sale cheap (usually RB Chryslers and Pontiacs). The caps fit all of the distributors (but you need the matching rotor). Buy one for parts.
If its a six cylinder it could fit vintage flathead mopar..include a pic and we can better help . I collect old plymouth flathead distributors if you are selling .
