I have an old Isky 505 camshaft that I'd like to use in my Caddy 390 build. Need help determining what type lifters (solid, hyd, roller) I need to use. I understand Chevy lifters will work.
    Any guidance appreciated.

Call isky and ask…..I live close but they still know all their products. Give them everything off the end. I always use THEIR recommendations.

  3. They made quite a few versions of their infamous '505' . . . it will depend on the material of the cam and what type of lifter it was designed for.

I called and they told me my cam takes 'chilled iron' lifters, but they no longer make them.
Does anybody have a suggestion for lifters like this or something that might work?
    Any good used lifters?

Dumb question, But what was the factory lifter?

  6. You'll probably have a hard time finding chilled-iron lifters . . . but worth trying. If you don't run this type of lifter you will gall the Hell out of the cam and/or lifters. You might be able to take a steel lifter and have it coated with a special coating - but I've not tried that.

Some Info. Chilled Iron Lifters part No 502. Four cam grinds 505- A-B-C-T. .028 Valve Lash. Hard Face Overlay Flat Tappet.

  8. Yep, back in the day Isky made quite a few hard-faced overlay grinds - all of which took a chilled iron lifter. I have a new 505 grind for an early Hemi - luckily, I have the lifters that go with it. It is probably damn near impossible to find chilled iron lifters these days . . . but maybe coatings will work???

Or maybe recoating the camshaft so you can use more common lifters? If it’s the standard blank with a “hardface overlay” maybe they can anneal it and “Parkerize” it or whatever the current process is.

Hard-faced overlay/insert on the street???? Ouch... maybe I misunderstand or using wrong terminology... Was told racing only, & probably drag at that(was an option on a hot 371 olds I was buying, so I left it w/the owner, got the isky roller instead).
Might want to look into tool-steel lifters. Still need to be hardened to correct specs. Done correctly, they'll outlive you & any # of cams you can try. :) .
It might require bronze(or other) bushings for correct clearances.
AVCW has a few versions, saw some claimed to be for a sbc, at a Comp Cams or Edelbrock display at the Btt50s(can't remember which mfgr, but they weren't very talkative, esp when asked tech-type Q's... sigh). So I figured maybe better elsewhere... :) .

  11. FWIW: Unless you can find a set of NOS Isky chilled-iron lifters for cheap, you'd surely be a whole lot better off talking to somebody like Bullet Cams to have a custom cam ground for your application. You could go hydraulic roller or mechanical roller - a zillion options are available and it would make more HP than an old 505 grind ever did. Just wanted to throw a bit of a "reality check" into the conversation. ;)

Also, even if you found the lifters, this was a drag only application and Isky never recommended attempting to run these cams/lifters on the street (they specifically said not to). So, you'd probably have issues with it . . . and those issues could put a lot of metal into your oil pan, through your bearings, etc.. ;)
