  7. Carl "Pop" Green started doing business as the Green Engineering Co. I think sometime around 1914/1915. I've yet to fully dive into Green Engineering, but from what I've found they were more known for their Model T and Marine Racing engines. I've yet to find info on the A/B Head, but I hope I can!     That's awesome! From what I've heard from a few Model B Hal owners, it sounds like they are a bit more hard on the cam bearings. Have you come across anything like that?

    Yeah I have heard the rumors
    The cam bearings are on the small side but usually it is a matter of insufficient lubrcation and being too heavy on the valve springs
    This head hasn't run since the 50's
    I'll post more as it progresses

    Lubrication makes alot of difference, it's a dream of mine to own a HAL....

    Now it’s time for me to look at my Slippy 9 inch

    I really don’t know why it’s slipping when I launch, maybe I just need more spring?

    They seem to fit ok. Have Probably only 50km (30mile) on them.

    Reconfiguring the shop a little, and finally brought home my spare motor from storage. I needed a stand that was 1) very inexpensive and 2) portable.

    Discovered the Harbor Freight 1,000 lb polypropylene dolly works very well. The oil pan sits beneath the frame of the dolly with *just* enough room to spare with some low-effort shimming, and the casters are decent enough quality that it rolls around just fine.

  16. It is a matter of clamping pressure
    If/when the disk wears it drops the ability to hold the tork because the clamping pressure is reduced
    It is possible to shim the springs in the cover or change the springs
    There are many variables too many to pinpoint the problem
    With the balancer sandwiched in does it move the clutch ***y too far back and not allow the throwout bearing clearance?

    Thanks for the reply John the clutch disk is two years old and there’s not that much clutch powder material around in the bell housing. It appears barely worn. I’m leaning towards more spring.
    I do not think the levers are riding on the throwout because the throat makes noise when I have the clutch in and it doesn’t make noise under normal operation. I am replacing the bearing.
    The center is machined out of the harmonic, the crank flange bolts to the original surface of the flywheel
    Does anyone think I should be concerned about the three hotspots on the flywheel and pressure plate where the pressure plate levers are?

  18. Is that pressure plate the tractor part or the V8 80 HP?
    While it is apart it might be wise to grind the flywheel to verify flat, it may stop some of the chatters.
    In the past, adding clamping pressure can be done by stepping the flywheel mounting surface, it doesn't take much.

    Post a picture of the throw out bearing side of your pressure plate. This way we can verify that you don't have the less desirable 9N tractor pressure plate as John mentioned above.

    I have a AEM stand alone ECU I'm going to use for fuel and crank fire ignition.

    Suggest you cruise over to Projects - Anyone in Maryland... | The H.A.M.B. as there might (or might not) be something there that interests you.

    This is the first time I've ever posted in the banger meeet threads but I come here and peruse occasionally. I'll never have a real hot rod banger, but I do have a restored '30 sedan that has a hopped up engine (internals only, nothing to see if I posted a pic), Mitchell overdrive, and 12V electrics. I drive the wheels off of that thing and I like to see what you folks are doing.

    Perhaps this isn't a pertinent question for this group, but maybe someone on here has an answer for me.

    My '30 I mentioned above has original wheels and matching skinny tires on it. I own a set of 16" 1935 Ford wire wheels. They currently are on loan to a friend but he's not using them. Would my car drive better if I got them back, installed new tires, and put them on my sedan?

    Even with the Mitchell I very seldom get over 55 mph with it. It's capable of more speed but isn't very comfortable going faster. I wouldn't say it gets squirrely but it's a handful.

    I met @winduptoy in Oklahoma last year at the SK-500 and really like his Vicky. I'd sure like to be able to drive my A long distances like he does.
     
  26. I run 19’s and don’t suffer any squirrelyness…

    I do however remove the odd leaf to soften the springs and run Rotoshim shocks.

    So, A friend of mine wound up with an engine and a couple transmissions, but hes not into bangers anymore so he asked me if ide be interested in them for $Free.99. The price was way too good to p*** up so I went and relieved him of them. What I was expecting was a worn out old engine and some junk transmissions but I was pleasantly surprised once I started tearing into it. Ill let the pics do the talking now

    .030 pistons, fresh valve seats, lightened flywheel, adjustable lifters are what Ive found so far. Im new to bangers but Ive always wanted to mess with them so Ill be doing lots of research now.
    The only thing Im still not certain of is the cam, I found a letter “H” stamped in the front but as far as I can tell I see no other markings. Am I even looking at the correct thing? IMG_9950.jpeg

    Turns out I was NOT looking at the right thing. Shows just how much I know about these engines lol. With the timing gear off, I see the letters “E” and “R” stamped on but nothing else.

    @atch as hot rodfil pointed out there might be other things which will help your handling, springs, shocks, wheel alignment - castor/toe in... Might be worth walking through that....
