Your right because I remember you and I were having fun trying to figure out if the wheels on a certain car were 18” or 20” on a thread that HRP had going on a show he was at in Cherokee NC…… and I’m sticking with staggered one of each:D:p

I’m getting a flood of private messages about this, most of them circling the same drain. “Maybe it’s time to loosen the restrictions on the HAMB. What do you think?” That sort of thing. Enough of them that it felt smarter to answer it out in the open instead of playing whack a mole in my inbox.

First off, I completely understand @Cody Walls frustration. His gripe about the format change breaking image links is of no fault of the forum, but having images pulled because of an off topic motor is another story, and yeah, that’s brutal when you consider the quality of his work and how much real education he puts out into the world. I get why that would sting.

But here’s the hard truth. I can’t run a forum I don’t personally have p***ion for. I can appreciate contemporary builds, LS motors, modern tricks, all of it, but appreciation is not the same thing as p***ion. I don’t wake up thinking about that stuff. I don’t lose sleep over it. So the HAMB stays locked down and traditional. It’s been that way for thirty two years now, and I can’t imagine changing course at this point.

And because there is a line, that line has to be visible. I try to keep it loose enough to allow some breathing room, so loose that it drives the moderators insane at times, but it still has to exist. I can’t have one guy posting LS motors while another guy gets his thread nuked for the same thing. Case by case judgment sounds nice until you realize it turns into endless work, endless arguments, and a whole lot of hurt feelings wrapped around a line nobody can actually see.

On top of all that, I’m under constant pressure from users who are deeply p***ionate about tradition. People very much like me, which also means they can be a pain in the ***. But they are the core. They are the ones I work hardest to serve, even when they’re rattling the cage.

So given all of this, the only thing I can really do is keep the line clear and hope folks try to understand what it’s like to sit in this chair. None of these decisions are personal. There’s always give and take, always tension, always compromise. I try every day to give more than I take, and I do it sincerely, even when it doesn’t look that way from the outside.

The sign out front says burgers. Don't come in and throw a fit because they won't serve you a steak, even if they both come from the same source. This is a burger joint. Oh, and the fries are cooked in lard, 'cause it's traditional!

EDIT: Ryan, it's the best burger joint I know of, even if the cook is getting older!

I see no reason to loosen things up to fit the m***es. Thanks for holding the line @Ryan. It is why I am here.

  10. Got an LS in the shop

not worried about posting or asking questions about LS stuff here.(main board anyway)

    I’m ok with that

I dig Cody’s builds. Several others as well. Guys with talent that kinda makes you want to give your tools away and never build again.

who cares if we’re not as good as others. Post the **** that fits the forum anyway.

don’t need an official tech week to post tech.
    Just build and post
    Problem solved

My comments were not to suggest the rules should be changed it was more to point to a possible reason a number of the builders that @rockable listed were no longer posting here. It came up a few years ago in a bi-annual "are customs dying" thread why Plowfink didn't make a build thread on his Zepher which has an LS and bags and the point I tried to make was the same. How much extra time do people expect guys to take to strategically take pictures or edit their photos to produce a build thread when it contains stuff that isn't allowed and if they don't their pictures get deleted? It takes enough effort as it is it's just easier to not do it at all.

Now having said that my guess what has killed tech and build threads more than anything is the laziness of people viewing these threads who do nothing more than like a post. I see numerous build threads of page after page of the OP putting up updates and nothing being said. You put in all the work to do***ent and post and the best someone can do is click the like ****on and within an hour your thread is 6 pages deep. That seems to be far more the norm these days than it was in the past. It's disheartening to put in all that effort and get no effort in return. As was said earlier you get out of it what you put in.

People spend more time and effort to reply to the inane posts than they do for the ones that actually make this place enjoyable.

I’m a FNG so I can’t speak of the old HAMB and some members who have left. However I can explain how I got here. I was looking for info on rust removal, bodywork and paint for an OT car I’m working on. The HAMB kept popping up on my searches. The more I dug into HAMB the more I learned I was astounded at the amount of skills, knowledge and info available. The HAMB is full of tech posts a lot of old one but some new ones also.
@Ryan thank you for the OT forum, I would love to see some of the “Greats” post some stuff there, LSs and all, it’s pretty much the Wild West.

    I hear you.

But I read this and took it as you thought we were doing something inappropriate from a moderation perspective. That we should make exceptions and rule on things such as LS motors on a case by case basis.

I wish we could... The very last thing I want to do is chase away people like Cody.

I 100% agree. Post like this very one... It drives me nuts. I will often work hours on a feature full of pretty great ****, post it, and wake up the next day to see like 5 replies while some thread featuring arguments over motor oil will have 300. It's an American problem that goes far beyond Hot Rods I'm afraid. Click bait drama over tangible value.

Sometimes I think it would be smart to get rid of the "like" feature though... force people to type... :)

I guess in a small way I was in that the technicality was more the notion that you can blur out offending material or do a ****ty photoshop of different wheels and its fine to post. No one is being fooled by it and still know it's stuff that shouldn't be here but it gets a p***. The idea that digitally altering a photo somehow makes it more traditional just seems odd to me.

you provide tangible value..very tangible plus exposure to stuff I missed most of my life...keep the ship righted and on course....
... the OP misses that tangible value he found in the tech threads is what I hear....and he used a clickbait ***le for his thread

my reply instead of smashing the like feature

So,............... If I want to post an "off topic" picture here ALL I have to do is make it in the background behind a legal car ?

Just trying to get a smile from some of you guys. :p

I understand that certain standards have been established and we need to abide by them. In defense, I will also say that sometimes when trying to provide some information to help someone, the example may only be available on a vehicle that has some "infraction", but showing the vehicle is not the essence of the post...........its only posted because it is the only available example the poster has. Also, the infraction may be something like incorrect wheels while the rest of the vehicle is acceptable....... and the essence of the post is to provide a visual example that helps others rather than display the car itself. I know I'm not explaining this very well, but I'm trying to point out that a little discretion might be considered before deleting.
A canned notice that could be posted below the "infraction" stating that the picture does not meet the Hamb requirements but "is being given an exception because it provides some esoteric or helpful information". Then you can delete ones that you think are too far from the standard while allowing ones that you think are worth keeping.

I will say that when I post some replies, I'm concentrating on helping someone with an explanation and honestly never noticed that I violated a rule. Still it's MY MISTAKE.....but Then after spending quite a bit of time honestly trying to help someone.........zap.

So thats why I like the fact that you created an "off topic" section. Thanks for that.............:)

I used to run the gate at a car show that was supposed to be kept strictly traditional, and I took a raft of the exact same ****, every year. I remember I kicked one guy's car out because it had polished Torq Thrust II's on it (an otherwise bone stock 4 door Impala) and he argued that I'd already let in several cars with the same wheels (real Torq Thrusts, not II's), I did my best to explain the difference. Later I overheard him tell his buddy that his car didn't get in "because my wheels were too shiny".

People so desperately wanted to be part of the show, yet they did not seem to grasp what the show was trying to be. They took it personally. But without that filter, the show wouldn't be special anymore, and nobody would be all that excited to get into it in the first place.

I had to eventually quit. I don't envy anyone who has that job.

  25. That’s why I only mess with open shows if I’m involved with working it.

if it has wheels it’s in

The only headache is the “why didn’t I win a trinket” crowd

As far as people commenting on my build threads, It doesn’t matter if people do or not, I don’t need people to comment for me to feel special. If someone learns something or gets a laugh I don’t care if I know or not. I don’t build cars for a popularity contest.

A friend of mine says a good joke elicits a response, whether it’s a laugh or a groan.

I think cars are the same.

It has nothing to do with "feeling special" the point of a forum is to interact with like minded people. If there is no interaction people might as well just post on Instagram its way faster and easier. Hence the reason many who used to post updates here no longer do but update their Instagram on a regular basis.

I think the reduction in the number of build threads has a lot to do with the ageing of the hobby. At 83, I have health problems and can just about guarantee you'll never see another one from me. I would suspect here are more than a few guys in my position. I've been around so long that all I can do any more is post smart-aleck comments on others' threads.
