My grandpa bought a 46 Pontiac fastback built by some Missouri hillbillies. They even called themselves by that moniker.

It was like this, a “whatever is lying around” build. It ended up with a Pacer front end, 460 Ford, C6 and a 9”. Had those ugly plastic looking 70’s tbird wheels on it. He had so much fun in that car and drove it everywhere. This was around 1990 before the patina thing took off. Looked like it was drug straight out of a salvage yard because it was!

Some had a smaller and lighter aluminum case rail shifted M*zda 5-speed.
Still plenty stout.

All different engine options mentioned here, but in my mind the cheapest, easiest and most available is to just toss a small block Chevy into it. I know they're boring as hell, but they're a dime a dozen, probably the cheapest and most available parts of any engine. If you just want to get it running, I can't imagine a cheaper, more readily available and effective way to get that done.

Far as accessories on post-war Pontiacs, the front office flooded the agency with all kinds of add-ons, & instructed them to load up the cars in stock. First 3 years after the war, cars were so hard to get that a customer would take what was offered, or do without.

 

Only if it's a 225, and even that will be on the edge for torque My choice would be a Ford 300 6.

Just for consistency's sake, I'd like to put a Pontiac SOHC-6 in it, although I doubt it has the kinda torque that the Ford 300-6 could offer. I'm comparing that post-war Poncho torpedo to our family's first car, a 1941 torpedo (my avatar). I can still smell the musty mohair of the interior, circa 1952.

That's a good engine choice. They are reliable and dependable engines. Additionally, you already have the engine.

I have a 41 Streamliner that I am slowly building. It'll get either a 270 GMC six, or a 235 Chevy six. I have a couple of 270's, including a parts engine with a 270H head.

Additionally, I have a relatively fresh 235, bored .060 over, with a ported head, and a Edelbrock 2 x 1 intake. However, this engine went through a very bad accident. It was torn off of its front motor mounts and shoved into the firewall of the 55 Chevy pickup that it was in. The engine does not have any visible cracks, but it took a very hard hit.

The rear axle in the 48 is a good design. It's basically a smaller version of the 9.3 Pontiac / Olds axle from 1957 to 1964. It seems like the center sections will interchange up to 1956. Not 100% sure on the interchange, though.
